Mystic Tantra - Hard Copy (Feedback Needed!)

I'm prepping pages for offset printing, and need your feedback on a few options I have pertaining to binding and content.

Saddle Stitching

Most comics are printed in this manner. The pages are double wide and folded at the center, then stapled in two places. This options is lightweight and relatively inexpensive as a binding method.

Perfect Bound

Books bound using this method are printed and cut, then glued to the cover. This is more common for higher page counts, like graphic novels, and allows for thicker paper stock for the pages.

Case Hard Cover

The most expensive method of the three. Books bound hardcover are more durable, and thicker.

Choice Considerations

To print economically, I would need to print at least 250 (preferably 500) books, so the choice is one that will stick with me for some time until (and if) the print run sells out. In either case, I'll need to create art for a front and back cover, and remaster the pages for CMYK.

Saddle Stitch is the cheapest option, and the easiest, with no page count requirements. Books would go for about 15$ each.

Perfect Bound requires a minimum of 32 pages, so I'd need to create additional content, like a short followup comic that comes after (A short with Nick and Finnick). I was hoping to have these available for FC, so there's no way I could create enough pages AND achieve the print turnaround needed to have them ready for that con. Books would be about 20$ each.

Hard Cover is a big upfront investment, and although it requires no page minimum, creating the extra content for it would make it more substantial. If the primary printing method is Perfect Bound, then a small run of variant covers in hardcover is possible as well. Books would be about 25$, provided they contain the same additional content as perfect bound.

How many of you would be interested in getting a copy? And what binding method sounds most appealing? Thank you for your time, and please leave your comments below to help me choose the best option.

Is there a link to the book sale

CrimsonKitsune9

are these still for sale?

Kento The Fox

Yeah I’m sure it can be shipped anywhere for the right postage cost

Zaush

i wanted a one, it is possible to ship it to germany?

N0ktan

The idea is to add additional pages to flesh out the page count, as people are most interested in a perfect bound book

Zaush

Well given the page count I think Perfect is a bit much unless you are going to include a lot of additional content. Same goes for Hard cover. The only real advantage to perfect over saddle would be the heavier weight papere with a gloss finish like an artbook as opposed to a news print quality page.

WarFox

I would want one

Olive

I'd get one for sure.

I’d get any one of them, whichever method you decide on.

M Accipio

Absolutely

Danielfox

One of my fav comic books out there saga, does saddle and case hardcover. Whenever they release a chapter, they release it in saddle. When they compile a bunch of chapters for volume one, they still do it saddle, but a bit more higher in quality for the cover and back page. Then there's the hardcover deluxe for over 500 pages, but has additional content.

butchicky

I would personally say Saddle only for the current length. But if you were to make a say "5 years of comics" (Number pulled out of my ass) book, then do the Hardcover and include sketches and maybe some commentary.

Saddle stitching. I'd love to see more in hard-case, but it really only works for larger graphic novels, and actual books. Although.... if there were a series of comics like this one, following all the different pairings through the same time period.... 32 pages of Bogo, Nick, and Clawhauser. Then 32 pages of Lionheart and Manchas. Then follow it with 36 pages of Fangmeyer and his naughty next door neighbors, the Stripper Tigers.

Monsieur Foxy

Definitely saddle stitching. The comic is not that long, and $20 and more seems like a little too much. The cheapest option would be the most practical for sure.

Mitch-Mitch

Saddle

Diego P

I agree with @Cats n' Cameras...for this page count saddle stitch would be more practical with perfect bound second. Either one I'd buy.

David Ewell

Saddle is easiest to do (i've done so :P ) Perfect is next easiest.. I'll likely pick one up reguardless.

Cats n' Cameras

While hard cover and perfect bound would be nice, it doesn't seem practical for this kind of comic and of this length. I'm going to have to vote saddle stitching.

Harris_the_Foxx

Saddle Stitching

SqrlTale

Maybe make a poll to get some feedback :o and I think perfect bound would look the best imo. The additional content would also be a huge selling point too~ You can put me down for a copy :D

Jake

I'd totally buy the hardcover. I love how it would look like a children's picture book! 😋

lilpaox

I'm with @Mircea on the risk of pissing off Disney. You don't want their lawyers. If you think you can protect yourself against that, I'd buy hardcover if available; perfect bound would be the next choice if there's no hardcover; and saddle stitch if neither of those are available.

Dawnwolf

hardcover

Sami Deveraux

I think Perfect Bound would be the better option. If you're thinking international shipping, I would look into getting one.

Perfect bound seems fine by I would love to have a hard cover! I have to many saddle stitched and wish there had been a hardcover option. What ever the decision your prices are totally fair and I would buy!

I would possibly like two. Bounding doesn't really matter to me, as long as it looks really nice :3

Beeton

Perfect bound and count me in!

Andrew Flores

O>O i want this is any shape or form

Mitsu Koboslime

I like Perfect Bound as well, but I would also purchase Hard Cover. Whatever you end up printing in, i will buy a copy.

Neverborn

Sounds like a wonderful idea... I'm down with any of the formats personally! Just be careful not to attract negative attention from Disney; Physical prints will likely piss them off more than digital art if they find out, and some pothead companies (like Nintendo) are known to bully ordinary people with legal threats. Other than that though, go for it! I wonder if I'll have the money to order one myself, it will depend on the price ultimately (hoping one copy may be <= 10$).

Mircea Kitsune

I would prefer perfect bound. It just seems to hold up better to *ahem* 'regular wear and tear'

JunkyardMouse

Most lookup their porn in Incognito Mode. This is pretty much the exact opposite.

James

Perfect bound sounds fine. This is pretty cool idea and would be interested in a copy.

COZICHOBO

Agreed.

S.

I think perfect bound strikes a good medium. I’d only worry about an independent press using good quality glue.

Kiraz

I would try to be economical and stay at saddle stitch for your comics until you have one setup at hand already to get perfect bind. In my opinion, the hard cover version rather would be an option for the collection of art

David Falid

I would like one

Im all for the extra content with Nick and Finnick! And perfect bind is the best option in my opinion. Im defintly going to buy the book when itll happend :)

I think perfect bound, because of the slightly increased content.

Sanmer

That is do awesome I would bri 25 when I am backing you again

ryanva1

I'm not a huge fan of saddle stitch, so my money would go to perfect bind. I would eagerly purchase 2 copies at $20-25 if it included a bit of Nick & Fennick. Those two in your style would be incredible.

Feryl

In all honesty, i think this is a question to put on websites you place the comic out for free. We are those that can afford or are willing to pay in order to see content sooner and see all the fun stuff you are up to. From a financial point of view it would be better to pull from non paying people. Then be conservative even with that because people can say they would for X but when X comes not actually want to pay for it.

Perfect Bound gets my vote with extra content, but will purchase whatever you decide to go with.

I'm going to go with perfect bound!

MaximumRabbit

I’ll probably keep the comics all separate, but a book with art could be interesting. Do you think there’s a market for that?

Zaush

I'm just wondering, you have drawn a lot of comic since now, and a lot of awesome art. Would you consider to publish a bigger book with all your comics and few of your masterpiece artwork ? it would be awesome :)

Hey Nice 😀

THe GERio

Hard cover would last way longer and protect the pages

Nick and finnick content yesssss hard cover would be good! I'll buy it either yay xD

Battouga-Sharingan

Thanks!

Zaush

Perfect bound would contain the extra content, same as the hard cover!

Zaush

Got it!

Zaush

Oh, I'll make sure it's not mixed up with a children's book... XD

Zaush

Perfect bound has my vote.

Big and hard for you!

Zaush

Print on demand doesn't live up to my expectations of print quality, and on top of it, the unit cost is so high that there's no real point in offering it. I'll definitely go offset even if I need to wait a few months to put together the extra content.

Zaush

I’d go big! Hard cover for me!

Carrot

If I did a hardcover, it would be as a variant to the perfect bound, with the same extras.

Zaush

I'd be able to ship them, yes.

Zaush

One note: CreateSpace will actually do full-color print-on-demand books, in pretty good quality, so you might consider that rather than a full print run, if you're not sure how many you'll end up selling. As for form factor, I dunno, I love hardbound books, but getting enough additional content for that to actually be a nice hardbound book might be challenging.

The Dread Vixen Alinsa

Would prefer hardcover but perfect bound sounds good with the extra content. Hard cover with extra content would be best.

Xibalba

Would this only be available at cons? Or would you be able to ship it out, if bought online? Personally, Id like perfect bound. I feel the comic was of a very high quality, and the book should feel like a trade paperback as opposed to just a comic book.

Zack Lego Maniac

I think the perfect bound option would be the best combo of content, printing expense and the buyers expense. Although I may also be somewhat biased as I would definitely like to see this extra Nick and Fin content.

Alibastaire

Perfect bond, hardcover is too much for a 20-30 pages long comic and you defiantly don't want to mix it up with children's book.

SonicWolfe

Well I know the one I'm most interested in is the perfect bound one with the extra content.

Sapph Wolf

That may be the direction I go with this, but it will delay the printing until after FC

Zaush

Perfect bound would be most desirable to me. Especially if it included a little short between Nick and Fin.

Jovo

Noted!

Zaush

Unfortunately I have to choose either all saddle stitched, or perfect bound with a limited run of hard cover. If I were able to do a small run of saddle stitched just for the con I would, but I need to commit to a single choice (with the exception of the hard cover variant along with perfect bound)

Zaush

Good to know! I'm leaning toward perfect bound and hardcover in a smaller variant run

Zaush

Saddle stitched is a cheaper, faster option, but it seems many prefer perfect bound or hardcover, and I imagine the hard cover will be a limited cover variant.

Zaush

If I do a hard cover as a limited edition, it would probably have the same internal content, but be hard cover. It could, however, have an alternate cover.

Zaush

That's exactly what I needed to know

Zaush

Thanks for letting me know!

Zaush

It's higher cost, yes. Not a lot per book, but it nearly doubles the print cost per book depending on what quantity is ordered

Zaush

Absolutely would be buying a copy and either perfect bound as a preference to go with the majority of my other furry collection, or saddle stitched. However even if it were hardcover, I would still buy. Especially if it was a signed copy :D

rpgbadger

That is a good point

Zaush

I'm sure it can be done, I'd just need to figure out how much it is to ship.

Zaush

It can be done, just not before FC which is coming up very soon.

Zaush

So...I wanna know that if someone like me who live in Taiwan, can I bought and get it in Taiwan?

Masier Rayna

As a consumer, I'd prefer a perfect bound or hard cover with bonus content. As a person who's a bit of a monetary tightwad, I'd go with saddle stitch.

Arsene Vulpin

I guess it really comes down to whether you have the time to work the extra pages for the Perfect bound option. As a reader and a fan of your work, I would definitely like to see something that is as remarkable as Mystic Tantra be printed on either a perfect bound or a hard case. But again, I believe it really comes down to if you have the time to do it.

Claybrook

I'd love just the simple saddle stitching. It is a good idea as someone else mentioned to do the others as limited and or special edition prints, even signed maybe...?

Felix Dillinger

I think a lot of people would enjoy having some extra content, like sketches or pin-ups.

Kookeh

I'd love perfect bound or hardcover with the extra content

joancotilla

What if you prepped a small batch (100-150) of Saddle Stitch to sell at the Con, then after, you can take some time to create a bit of extra content for a larger batch of Perfect Bound or Hard Cover copies?

Kookeh

I would be interested in a copy. You can do a perfect bound and a hardbound that's a limited edition including extra content cool to see.

Robert

Perfect bound or hardcover - please, anything but saddle stitch! I want my copy to last!

I'd buy one no matter how you print it, but I'd love to have a perfect bound copy with extra content.

Camaro Shepherd

Hard cover, just as it's not common with furry comics? I imagine higher cost tho?

Mark Banks

I'm down for a physical copy. I'd be interested in perfect bound or hardcover.

Any feedback on the binding method I should choose?

Zaush

I want 5 copies :p

Mark Banks
