(Complete) Devil In The Waters, Book 2, Chapter 8

In the kitchen opening a bag of Zesty Cheese Doritos, Steve joined Josh, looking to pop the first beer of the night. Meyer was working on convincing sleepy Sophie to pack it in for the night, go have a lie-down on her Auntie Kimmy’s bed. Sophie was tired but amped. One soda pop and that cute little girl was all live-wire energy, boogying away for her dance game, loving all the attention and getting laughs from her Uncle Josh, whom she adored. But Soph was on the precipice edge of a big fall, standing on that cliff edge of hearty uncompromising sleep. About a second away from falling face-down on the couch and being carted to bed. Meyer was putting smart choices in his daughter’s repertoire, sweet-talking adult logic to a kid who wanted to party still.

“Am I crazy, or is Soph the cutest kid you’ve ever seen?” Steve was at his side, both of them watching Meyer’s daughter listening patiently to her father’s reasoning.

Josh said, “I know. She’s so adorable.”

“You guys trying again?”

“Me and Kimmy? It’s on the table. Kimmy’s thinking about working too.”

Steve put three bottles of Heineken on the counter without making them rattle, alcoholic beverages at the ready for when Sophie went to bed. Josh poured Doritos from the bag to a big serving bowl. Steve said, “I gotta get a girlfriend.”

Josh laughed; Meyer took Sophie by the hand walking her past the pass-through, winking, joyless Sophie surrendering and wishing Josh and Steve a polite good night, both of them leaning over the counter, singing ‘Night Sophie, waving, getting a little smirk from her. Josh went through the roster of the available girls in their age group who worked with them at Swanson, but the numbers were slim. Steve shot them down. Josh told him to join a gym or something, take up a hobby he’d like a girl to have. They popped the tops on their beers and took swigs.

“Hey,” Steve said, “whatever happened with that thing with Kimmy?”

“What thing with Kimmy?”

“You know, where you said she was with that guy when you were passed out. The guy from high school, at your guys’s reunion.”

And just like that, his evening went grim. He hid it from his face, but shrugged for Steve’s sake, like it was nothing, not like the big weight on his back he sometimes pretended it wasn’t. It was hearing someone else bring it up out of the ether, talking life into a thing he could sometimes say was just his imagination. It had been shoved to the back of his closet, but now it toppled forward and landed on his toe. “Imagination is funny, you know how it is.”

“Good,” Steve said, taking another swig. “I hated to think something like that could be real.”

“You were the one who said—”

Meyer appeared on the other side of the counter, reaching for his Heineken and saying, “What could be real?”

Steve didn’t want to say, so he plugged the bottle end in his mouth and drank, leaving it to Josh. Josh waffled, said, “Uh, this thing I told him . . .” Then couldn’t finish.

Steve swallowed, looked to Meyer who popped his own beer, standing on the other side of the counter looking perplexed and maybe a little left out. Steve said to Meyer, “Your cuz is a worry wart for no reason.”

Meyer nodded, chuckled, drank.

Josh said, “It’s nothing. Kimmy . . .”

Meyer was interested, leaning elbows on the counter top.

Steve said, “Josh went to that high school reunion.”

Meyer said, “Yeah, I know. He drank too much, passed out. He told me.”

Josh said, “When I was out, Kimmy maybe got in, like, a fight with someone.”

Meyer tried not to laugh, then saw Josh was serious. “You mean like a fist fight?”

“Yeah.”

Steve said, “With a guy.”

Meyer said, “What guy?”

Josh said, “You remember Devin from my high school?”

“No . . . Maybe. Jock or something?”

“Right.”

Meyer said, “Why did she get in a fight with this guy?”

Steve said, “Kimmy wouldn’t tell him.”

Meyer said, “That’s weird.”

“No, she did,” Josh said. “Eventually.”

Steve said, “Oh yeah? You didn’t tell me. Why?”

“I can’t say. It’s Kimmy’s biz. I don’t want to talk about it, guys, can we just play some Modern Warfare, please?” He nodded his chin to the TV where the menu for Sophie’s dancing game still swirled.

“Yeah, yeah,” Steve said. “So it was a fight? Not something else?”

Meyer said, “Something else?”

Josh waved the conversation away, grabbing the bowl of chips and his beer.

Meyer said to Steve, “Something else, something else? . . .”

Steve said, “Told you your cuz is a worry wart.”

On the couch, Meyer was still interested. “Josh, you think it was something else?”

“I don’t want to talk about it. Look, Kimmy and I worked it out. It was nothing. Well, no, not nothing, but Kimmy and I dealt with it.”

The worry on Meyer’s face bothered him. And he hated to have his cousin thinking bad of Kimmy. “It’s fine, Meyer, I mean it, really. Kimmy and I . . . this week we’ve never been better.”

Meyer looked unconvinced but knew he had to let it go. Steve broke the uncomfortable silence with some eager pre-game hype man talk, firing up Modern Warfare. Then farting. Meyer laughed.

But Josh was thinking now how Kimmy’d been out of sorts when they got home. How she’d wanted the car today. Why? So he wouldn’t show up at home at lunchtime unannounced? Had Devin been here today, fucking her on their bed? Kimmy was all tired out, had to have a nap in the afternoon and recover from the big-dick pounding Devin gave her. Her demeanor when he’d arrived home replayed in his head and now he attributed guilt to everything she did and everything she’d said. Couldn’t hang out and talk with them for too long, the guilt was so strong, Kimmy not able to meet his cousin’s eyes knowing what she’d done today with another man, how she’d betrayed Josh . . .

Or it was nothing.

This was over. It was supposed to be behind him. But the all-consuming thoughts returned.

Five minutes later, he’d excused himself from the room to go to the can, sitting now on the toilet so he could fire up Find My Phone . . .

***

With the hatch of the Qashqai open, headlights from behind beamed her shadow over the cargo area. She tossed in her purse, her bag, then slammed the hatch door down as the headlights careened sideways and the car pulled up to stop. She turned. It was Devin.

He sat low in his Mercedes, his big frame filling up the cockpit, elbow on the door sill. Smirking at her, his cheek dimpled. “Told you fifteen.” The depth of his voice made the words decipherable even over the music coming from his stereo.

She was sure to show her unimpressed face for a long beat, waiting for him to turn the stereo down. When he did, she said, “I don’t know if you’re looking for a gold star or what . . .”

But if she thought she had him, she didn’t. He said, “I get a gold star from you it won’t be for finishing fast.”

She chuckled, not at the joke—it was juvenile—but at his ability to disarm. She could rail now, tell him he’s a pig, but it was probably what he wanted. She said, “What do you want, Devin? It’s late. I’m on my way home.”

“Not even nine, Kimmy,” he said. “Not late. Night’s just getting started.”

“Maybe for you, Devin, but I was on my way home. I appreciate you coming by, but I think if anything needs to be said between us in the future, we can do that by text. But I don’t even see a reason for that.”

“You don’t?”

“Do you?” She crossed her arms, leaned her butt against the back of the Nissan.

He didn’t answer, dipping his head out of the reddish light from the gym’s wall-mounted sign way above and behind her. She swore he was ruffling his hair, checking himself out in the rearview mirror. When his face reappeared in the open car window, his dashing smile was wide. “Give me five. We’ll go up the road, find some place serves a half decent Scotch, and I’ll tell you all I can offer.”

“I know what you offer.”

His smile faltered. Returned. “You don’t want it?”

“Don’t need it, thanks.”

He raised his eyebrows, made an interested sound in his throat. “Go back home. Back to your apartment. Back to the firm making what you make. Sleeping in the same bed, waking the same, never knowing the could have beens.”

Was he talking about a job or not? “Your first year psych 101 shit doesn’t work on me, Devin. Nice try, though. I mean it.”

He laughed heartily, freely, a quick head toss back. “You’re a diamond, Kimmy,” he said.

“I am a diamond.”

The humor left his face a moment. His eyes traveled from her sneakers, up her yoga tights to her face. He smiled again, eyes narrowed. “You’re like a diamond in a greasy cardboard box someone brought home from the grocery, you in that apartment. So much. So wasted.”

“I’m not wasted, Devin.”

“You know you’re not going to make baskets.”

“I’m not. I’m stopping.”

“So what are you going to do? Back to immigration? Linoleum floors, fluorescent lights, two weeks a year, hoping you have enough for Cuba?”

“Work is more than what you bring home.”

“Really?” He laughed now, watching a car coming behind, waiting to see if he’d have to move aside from the lane he was blocking, but the car pulling down an aisle on the prowl for a parking spot. “Your level of expertise, sitting five days a week, all that potential. To do what? Help someone get a leg up here? Die on your sword if you want, Kimmy. You’re too smart to fall for what you call my bullshit. But. But . . . you’re too smart to think I’m wrong, too.” He showed a snide flash of a smile, his eyes hidden in the shadow of his door frame, teeth lit in gym-light red.

She bounced off the Nissan lightly, arms still crossed, went to the Mercedes’s open window, peering inside his expensive car, all the gauges and dials, polished walnut and leather. “I tell you what, gold star. I’ll give you that five minutes if you use it to give it to me straight. For once, I’d like you to talk like you’re not dancing around something.”

***

All she wanted was some straightforward communication. This wasn’t sex. This wasn’t an affair. Tell me what you mean. Is there a job, or is all this a ploy to get me to open my legs? Because it won’t happen again . . .

They were in his Mercedes, a stupid thing for her to do, but it was too late now, sitting on the leather bucket chair next to Devin, rocketing into Ajax proper. She wore her yoga tights, a tank top, a fleecy jacket and sneakers. Devin wearing most of a suit. Pants and belt, dress shirt, no tie, cuffs unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up. His forearms were hairy. Black hair. Muscular too. More than in high school. Mature muscle.

Devin said, “Where’s there a bar around here?”

“I don’t know,” she said, shifting in her seat, looking around to get her bearings, thinking of the places out by the 401, all filled with too-young people, then thinking of the Dragon. Not far from where they lived, though. Pictured sitting at the bar, Josh, Meyer, and Steve coming in for a drink, seeing her there, the shock on her face. But, no. Not with Sophie. Sophie in bed, it was past her bedtime, they wouldn’t bring her nor leave her at home. Call a sitter so they can go to the bar? Those three playing Modern Warfare, beers in the fridge, stomachs full of pizza, looking to go out of the apartment for a drink? Not in a million years . . .

“Turn right up ahead,” she said, “then a left. I’ll show you. There’s a pub . . .”

“Place where we can talk?”

“So you do want to talk?”

“Kimmy’s telling me she wants to hear it straight, doesn’t want to dance anymore,” he said aloud like to himself. “Let’s sit down, see what I say . . .”

“Why don’t you show me some respect? You say I’m so much better than all those girls from high school, yet you talk to me like I’m one of them. Like I’m some bimbo who’s going to eat out of your hand.”

“I don’t talk to you like that.”

“You do, Devin. Everything is like you want to get in my pants.”

He turned his face to hers, mocking an uh-oh expression, the passing streetlights flickering on the ridges of his cheekbones.

It was surprisingly comical. Not arrogant for once, but personable. She laughed. Then he did too. She said, “That’s all you want? Get in my pants? You really are an asshole.”

He laughed still, eyes on the road, a calmness loosening his features, still in the joke, even enjoying her messing with him. “Your pussy is just a piece of pie in the bakery, Kimmy.”

The tone of his voice was calm, unprovocative. Not teasing her, maybe even in a way saying he didn’t want to get in her pants. He did, though. It was clear by his actions. And of course that he had already gotten in her pants. But if sex was only a piece of the puzzle, what was the whole picture?

***

There was fear walking from Devin’s Mercedes to the Fox & Dragon she’d encounter Josh and Steve and Meyer. Or maybe another acquaintance. But there was no one. Late on a Tuesday night who would they run into? No one in Ajax knew Devin. Few people in Ajax even knew her, and she lived here. Maybe someone from the building?

It didn’t matter; they saw no one on the street, and she got ahead, scanned the windows of the Dragon as they passed under the brick arch, coming to the empty patio. Inside the pub were no faces she knew. Only a half dozen patrons total, none of the crowd looking like people she would associate with.

They took seats at the very end of the bar so they could be alone, the nearest patrons congregated clear at the opposite end of the bar. She got on a stool, hooked her sneakers on its rung, swiveled and watched Devin take his spot next to her. His eyes were down low, and when he sidled next to her, sitting open, fucking man-spreading with his knees out wide like a pair of wings, he said, “What do you do at the gym? Yoga or something?”

“Gym stuff. Treadmill, weights. I do yoga once a week.”

“It’s working.” He put a hand on his hip, suit jacket open, white shirt tight against his hard belly, waving to the bartender.

She said, “What, were you checking me out the whole way here? I knew I should have let you walk out front.”

“Yeah, but you had to keep an eye out for people you knew,” he said, and before she could interject the bartender was there. Devin said, “Best Scotch?”

The guy nodded, assessing Devin, taking it all in. The expensive watch, the stare, the expensive suit, the build . . . If Josh were so brusque, the bartender would come back at him passive-aggressive. This guy just smiled, said, “Oban. Not the highest shelf in the world, but you can’t tell me it’s not great.”

Devin said, “Two doubles,” and the bartender got to pouring.

She said, “Think I’m a Scotch drinker?”

He leaned a forearm on the padded edge of the bar saying, “I think you like nice things. I think you’re interested in what a good Scotch tastes like.”

“I’ve had Scotch before.”

“Indulge me. You want something else?”

“Scotch is fine,” she said.

The bartender set low glasses with an inch of amber whisky in the bottoms. Devin lay down a twenty and a ten and waved off change. He picked up his glass and held it out. She collected hers, met his, they touched glass. Devin said, “To the beginning,” and sipped his Scotch.

She tasted her Oban, hid a grimace, set the glass down on the chipped bar counter’s Newcastle coaster. “The beginning of what?”

He said, “The beginning of something incredible.”

“This is what I’m talking about, Devin,” she said, her voice edged with irritation. “Treat me with respect. I don’t like this double talk and innuendo. It’s not me. I’m not one of those girls. You want to begin something with me, you’re going to make it clear. Do you understand?”

He flashed that mean smile. Mean but gleeful. “More I talk to you, Kimmy, the more I know I found a killer. Someone like me.”

“I’m not a killer, and I’m nothing like you.”

“You don’t even know,” he said, smug. Like she wasn’t aware yet, but he was right.

“What did you bring me here for? You still can’t say. More I talk to you, the more I think you’re just that: talk.” She sipped more Oban, prepared for it now, not minding its hot bite. Devin joined her, then set his glass down.

“Alright. You want it straight. I’ll tell you.” He paused for dramatic effect.

She regarded him with lazy, hooded eyes. “Hit me.”

“Two minutes from now I’m going to offer you a job. Lawyer job. One you’d be crazy not to take. You’re going to take it. Not tonight, but you’ll call me in a day, tell me it’s a deal. You want to talk Josh first.”

“So this is about a job after all?” A tingle of excitement began, imagining the challenge of a new endeavor, of making money.

He undid another button on his dress shirt, showing her the base of his neck, tilting his jaw so she could see the stretch from his collar bone to his ear, shaded with stubble this late in the day, the tendons and cords standing out. “Thirty minutes from now, Kimmy, I’m going to have you on a hotel bed.” He touched his neck with an index finger. “Fucking you deep. You’re going to come, you’re going to scream, you’re going to bite me here”—he tapped the finger to a spot on his neck—“Tell me I’m wrong.”

It was a surprise. She’d asked for honesty and he’d delivered it. What he wanted wasn’t unexpected. She couldn’t even be mad. That was what she knew he’d say. “You’re wrong. That’s how you offer a job? Tell me I have to fuck you?”

“Not at all. The two are separate. Work for me. Fuck me three times a week. That’s what I want. You wanted to know, so there it is. You asked if I was watching you walk ahead of me? Yes. I watched your ass, and I pictured you on all fours, my view, your ass, fucking you doggy.”

“You’re disgusting. I have to fuck you for this job?”

“No. We’re going to fuck because you want it as bad as me. Fight it if you want. Take the job, never fuck me. No big deal. I’m not trying to date you, marry you. I want to fuck you. Say no.” He touched a napkin closer, reached in his suit jacket and withdrew a fat black pen, a Mont Blanc. He scribbled on the blank side of the napkin and presented it to her, returning his pen to an interior pocket. “You have everything I want. That’s innuendo, I know. I’m talking about a smart woman, really fucking deadly smart, treading water presently but oh-so-hungry. Went to Queens, went to Western. Speaks Chinese. That’s what I offer that caliber.”

She read the number. Three-point-eight-something times more than what they paid at the immigration firm. “That’s a lot of money.” Her heart raced with the number. Knew she was worth it.

“Lot of responsibility. It’s not easy. High pressure sometimes. High stakes. I need someone who isn’t a fuck up. Kimmy Chang is goddam perfect.”

“Waters. Kimmy Waters.”

“You’re Kimmy Chang you work for me.”

“You want to see a Chinese name on your roster.”

“Not me. Everyone else.”

“That’s all I am?”

“Chinese? No. Told you about that bakery.”

She huffed a small laugh, any snide answer deadened by the big number with the dollar sign scrawled across the napkin. A lawyer. Chinese. Smart. Beautiful. Better than those other girls. And he wanted her pussy. “I’ll have to think about it,” she said, pushing away the napkin.

“You’ll take it. You’ll call me tomorrow, tell me you want it. Too smart. You just gotta talk to Joshy first.”

“I do.”

“Want me to talk to him?”

“I do not.”

“Good. I’m glad. We’re done, Kimmy, that’s it. The beginning. Finish your drink. I want to get your hot naked ass on that hotel bed.”

Tim ziegler

The blog site disappeared for everyone?

Anjali

Hey KT... Now that book 1 is out for purchase and you changed Devin’s name to Devlin.. are you going to make that change here too? Seems like it would make editing easier for you in the future!

Chinookfan72

i agree with everything you are saying about Kimmy in regards to her current life, and I also agree she will soar with the new job and will be an asset to Devin in that regard. I also think she will become more confident personally as she continues to succeed and being aided by Devin continuing to challenge her. What I don’t think will happen is Kimmy breaking out of her shell so much that suddenly above Devin in regards to the power dynamics of the relationship. To me the power Dynamic will always be Devin>Kimmy>Josh. Through time I think Kimmy will become more equal to Devin in a lot of ways, but she’ll always be, for a lack of a better term, his beta. He is after all her boss, and he is far too physically imposing and confident for a Kimmy to ever gain the upper hand. I do think Devin wants to see her grow so he will let her take the reigns in some aspects, but when it comes time for the bedroom I think Devin will be in charge (Kimmy would probably want it that way anyway). I do see her becoming more alpha in her relationship with Josh such that she will be coming up with ways to humiliate Josh and the humiliation won’t just come from Devin.

Chinookfan72

KT usually create strong female character (tho sometime hidden). I don't see it to be so implausible for Kimmy to come from the shadows and take charge of things. I see, as Amy and Devin see her living a mundane low expectation life. Till the reunion every step has lead her into a lesser existence (Note: being a mom isn't a negative) her self-worth keeps taking hits. Amy actions are more in the form of intervention. Kimmy need the job with Devin so she can soar. All this has less to do with sex and more to do reinvigorating Kimmy's soul. Re-evaluate what has been written so far. It's just one plodding step, down one, after another, down into mediocrity... If you look at it more from Kimmy life it's kinda depressing. I could not get the Amy motivation until recently. I don't thing I've analyzed a piece of literature outside of a school setting this deeply in a long time. KT you may want to think about tweaking this to be a mainstream/romance work it that good! $$$

RCH

Its not so much I think shes thinking rationally as there are environmental factors preventing her from losing her grip on her fidelity. Because of those, Devin has to play smarter (which I think he does).

JamesIsAsleep

thanks for clarifying again, and don’t worry about coming off as a dick, I didn’t get that vibe at all. I guess our differences really just come down to how we see Kimmy, you seem to think she is far more rational when it comes to Devin than I do, and it seems you think her relationship with Josh is stronger than I do (meaning she is going to consider his feelings, and any mention of his name will immediately kill the mood.) I’m not sure my view of her is strictly from the story, or if I am predisposed to think of her the way I do based on how KT pitched the story ( an affair with a high school bully). Given it’s supposed to be an affair I’ve pretty much written off that Josh’s feelings are going to register in her decision making when it comes to fucking Devin.

Chinookfan72

As long as there is plenty of sex along the way I have no issues with your scenario.. KT can make Kimmy a bad ass, but based on the story so far I doubt that is the direction it’s going... Also do you have any (Kim)possible scenarios?

Chinookfan72

Just me spitball a (im)possible scenario! this thing has fooled me so often so far. I would have figured Kimmy would have given in to temptation a long time ago. Our problem is we are in a strange time inversion because we are waiting weeks to learn what has happened in just a few days/weeks story time. when this thing is complete it won't be so teasing and stressful. Normally we get complete books that most of us read in an evening or two. We are see this one in such a false way! My little scenario above was not the weak Kimmy being seduced by Devin but the Hard Ass, killer lawyer Kimmy winning and take what she wants and deserves. It's bad enough Devin may want to complain to HR about her!

RCH

It's a fair question but I kind of explained it already, not to be a dick but I just dont want to copy and paste. I think Kimmy has too many barriers in place, I'll try to elaborate on my position in other directions: 1) They're in a public place that can help shield Kimmy from going too crazy (different from being by themselves like at the reunion and in the apartment), even if she wants Devin she has being in public to help let her rational side take over (Devin too), and it's hard to imagine a car ride would help improve Devin's odds getting laid. I have to think theres nothing scarier to a female than a car ride to mysterious locations with men with questionable intentions (even if they want them). Best play for Devin in that instance is to take her to her car and call it a night. As I mentioned above, the only thing I could see leading to them hooking up is if Devin has some kind of way of appealing to Kimmy's rational side to convince her to come with him somewhere else (the one more trick thing I was saying). 2) As mentioned, and as you also said, Devin has already laid out that she should go home and think about this job opportunity. To me he's boxed himself out of getting Kimmy to go to the hotel with him by granting her this out. He even brought up Josh. Sure he said he wants her to go back to the hotel with him tonight too, but Devin, dude, that the best you got? Again, I go back to Devin needs another move for Kimmy to do anything more than get home with A LOT to think about. A case can be made for what you're saying, and in a lot of ways I want you to be right, I would need more to be written and I think a pendulum swing (not a reference to Devin's member) for me to feel like something could happen tonight.

JamesIsAsleep

I like the cut of your jib, BNR ...

JamesIsAsleep

in reading the comments, my appreciation for KT grows on a daily basis. There are so many different opinions on what people want to see in the story, I’ll be content with whatever KT decides to do. my only hope is we are in book too of a many book series (7+), and once Devin and Kimmy do end up going all the way, that they continue to hook up and we get to read all about it. what I like about books like this is two people can read the same story and come to different conclusions of what would or wouldn’t make sense, and because we have this outlet be able to discuss them... Like you say it doesn’t make sense that Kimmy would go all the way now, but to me Kimmy going all the way makes complete sense. My take on Kimmy is she hasn’t denied Devin anything since the party and in fact the only reason they haven’t had sex yet is either because they got interrupted or Devin had to catch a flight. The most telling thing in this story to me so far is when Devin came over to Kimmy’s apartment she is the one, despite saying he needs a condom, that lined up the dick for insertion and she is the one that got mad about not getting to fuck (telling Devin to just leave then). I think if they walk out to the car right now and Devin kissed her she would return the kiss and from there Devin would control how far they go. Kimmy suddenly putting on the breaks on her own is something that doesn’t make sense to me.. I’m interested in your take on Kimmy and why you don’t think she’d go along with sex now?

Chinookfan72

The tease is so delightful. Being made to wait to see if she will or more accurately, when!

BNR

agreed! Plus, I think that it might be HOTTER that Kimmy tell Josh that she really wants this job. For her. For her career and the fulfillment that it would bring to her on a personal and professional level. But the HOTTER also because Josh wants (or would want) Kimmy to be happy and fulfilled! (Pun intended!) And they could talk about the fact that Devin is not going to stop hitting on Kimmy. The his consistent influence on her, say in and day out, may be immensely dangerous to her resolve and in turn, their relationship! Yummy!!!!

BNR

I'm suspending my disbelief re Kimmy's credentials for this one lol

Glaucon

Well I could be wrong (I usually am!) I think Kimmy will go home and present the job to Josh and they will agree on it after much discussion. Kimmy takes the job and Devin is on his best behavior because business before pleasure. Kimmy settles in. (time passes...) Only after a particularly difficult negotiation Kimmy is successful is getting Devin's company a very lucrative contract. The result is a 25% increase in Devin's revenues. The celebration, Devin's praise, plus the post battle win testosterone bump setup a situation where Kimmy is the aggressor. The negotiations are in the Far East and Josh is home in Canada. Amy may play a factor. Devin is not the reason she fall's Kimmy is.

RCH

Yunjin Kim gets my vote. Just the balance between beauty, innocents, and a touch of worldliness.

RCH

Right, got it. By the way, I've been ready for Devin and Kimmy to hook up, lol, but just how the story has been written it doesnt make sense to me so I almost dont want it to happen for that reason. That makes sense in my head, what I just said ... I can be easily persuaded by what KT writes next though 😋

JamesIsAsleep

I’ll also further clarify cause I wasn’t suggesting you didn’t think Kimmy is into Devin. I was, as you wrote, “disagreeing she needs more tap dancing before she jumps in”. When I wrote she is interested in Devin’s vision, I was referencing his vision of them fucking in a hotel room in 30 minutes. Based on the ending of this chapter she is obviously flattered by him calling her smart and beautiful, and most importantly for our conversation, that he also wants her pussy. I’m not saying they are going to have sex tonight, if I were betting I’d say they are going to mess around in the car on the way back to the gym, and Kimmy is probably going to blow Devin. Ultimately what will stop them is time, because both of them know Josh only thinks she is going to the gym so they don’t have the time to fuck, even though both equally want to. The only way I see full on sex on this night of the story is if Devin can come up with a believable lie for Kimmy to tell Josh that will let her stay out for another couple hours, and I don’t think that will be the way KT goes. Either way KT goes is cool with me.. Personally I’m ready for them to have sex now, but my guess would be most of KT’s audience wants it to be drawn out further.

Chinookfan72

That money will not help with the grief he’s headed for!

Tim ziegler

But it's so much money! 😋

JamesIsAsleep

I know that’s where the story going but there’s no way in hell Josh can let her work for Devin with their history. But I think she will try to hold out till after she starts for sex to ease her conscious.

Tim ziegler

My point got muddled here, I'm ultimately saying I don't see a path towards Devin getting any tonight. If you read more carefully about what I said, I think it would take a change in Kimmy from what we've read tonight for anything to happen (the spark of spontaneity comment), ultimately tonight seems to lead to nothing other than Kimmy going home, needing to change her undies.

JamesIsAsleep

To be fair I was also commenting off Jordan’s last sentence about her actions speaking to her interest - I’m not commenting on how much more needs to happen before Kimmy gives in. Maybe a little more happens tonight, maybe a lot more, maybe nothing. It could be written any of these ways. Of course I always root for things to be more drawn out :P.

Glaucon

Ohhhh, my bad, I was assuming you were replying to Jordan's take on my view of Kimmy and Devin's current situation ... yes she is most certainly into it despite herself.

JamesIsAsleep

I don’t know what in my comment would make you think that... you’d have to read my comment already assuming I disagree. You talked about Kimmy being thirsty and I commented about how consistently Kimmy has been thirsty.

Glaucon

Steve ,Meyer, and Karina will know what’s going on as soon as she takes the job it won’t stay a secret!

Tim ziegler

I'm guessing Kimmy gets defiled in the car. It would be a big leap to go to a hotel. Love that she is ok changing back to her maiden name. Her descent is sublime. Also like Tim Z's idea on the warfare group marshalling forces against Devin. And Josh hooking up with Karina really lights me up.

Wess

Ok KT everyone’s giving their wish list here’s mine,Josh and Kimmy have huge blow out before he submits.Josh,Steve and Meyer put their head together a go modern warfare on Devin. And the cherry on the pie Josh hooks up with Kimmy’s best friend! I’m almost positive mine would be the only one to go this way Just looking out for a Modern Warfare “bro”!

Tim ziegler

the “sign tonight” angle doesn’t make sense though.. He’s already acknowledged that she needs to talk to Josh first about the job and in reality she does there is no way she would accept a job with Devin without talking to Josh first. To me another move isn’t necessary, Kimmy’s actions (both at the party and in her own apartment) show she is easily able to push the rational side of herself away. Once Devin told her the job and sex are separate, if she wasn’t game for sex she would have thanked him for the job offer and told him they’d be in touch (if she is actually considering the job) and then called an uber or taxi and bring her back to her back to her car. At this point everything is on the table if Kimmy is going to fuck him she’s going to fuck him. Reverting back to moves I think is cowardly and it wouldn’t be in Devin’s nature, and I think Kimmy would see through it and it would turn her off. Reverting to moves is something Josh would do, she isn’t looking for another Josh.

Chinookfan72

Greed and lust vs charity and love…a tag team match. Looks like greed (or more kindly put, an opportunity for a career as a mover and shaker) is the foot in the door. Lust will follow but I, too, hope it doesn’t right away…get Josh on board with the job and the rest will follow.

TF

*Taps microphone* is this thing on, lol. I was just acknowledging that there is a distinction between wanting Devin and actually doing Devin, and that I think that Devin needs to do a little more to get Kimmy to fully commit to adultery. You can disagree that she needs a little more tap dancing before she jumps in, but these replies read like people think I was saying that Kimmy isn't into Devin, which ... I mean come on ...

JamesIsAsleep

If you survived the Lebanese civil war you'd be a lot tougher and more resourceful than a bunch of trustifarians 😈 And, yeah (from your comment below), I like the idea of Kimmy as a self-directed temptress and slut - sexy clothes, wedding ring, new car, etc. It's about time for her to give it back good to Devin - see who cracks first.

Donkatsu

I like her using the maiden name too - although personally I hope she dresses sexier of her won accord (easier for her to rationalize and shows a subconscious expression of her desires) and keeps her ring on (matter of taste, but more humiliating to Josh I think. Everyone in the office knows Kimmy's married).

Glaucon

Using her maiden name really gets me tingling...now if only Devin could convince her that she needs to dress sexier when she's working for him and not wear her wedding ring either!

Anjali

She could have left at the bar, she could have gotten away at the gym, she never had to text Devin today at all, she could've refused to see him again last week. Again and again, Kimmy proves she doesn't reeeeally want the interactions with Devin to stop.

Glaucon

I don't know how far along you are so I won't spoil anything, but one big thing I like about the show is that NO ONE is so smart that they outwit everyone else all the time, no one's infallible, everyone is vulnerable to their emotions and relationships and wants (except maybe Marcia :P).

Glaucon

I dunno. I kind of like the feel of “You’re Kimmy Chang, you work for me.” KT, this is going swimmingly. Devin is such a rogue and Josh is finally through his naive trust period. Time for Kimmy to crush him. OT, Glaucon, thank you for sending my time management into a black hole with a "Succession" binge. I thought Shiv would be smarter, but she seems to actually be more naive than the rest of the crew; and boy did she get played by Rhea (and dear old dad).

Donkatsu

Trying again - The reason I think Devin needs one more move to hook up with Kimmy tonight (what I reference in my first post) is because the side of Kimmy that is rational/cares about Josh already feels like she is committing adultery by going with Devin to the bar. That part of her had the excuse that they were talking about a job. There is currently no reason for Kimmy to go to a hotel with Devin other than to fuck, and since Kimmy doesnt want to hurt Josh I think Devin needs one more trick to coddle Kimmy's angel shoulder. Even in the rationale that I thought Devin could use about, "If you sign tonight, you have to come with me (subtext: to wherever the paper work is where we will also fuck)," Devin gives Kimmy an out to say no to him when he says she'll need a day to think about the job offer and even brought up Josh. Both things Kimmy acknowledged thinking about but could probably ignore if they weren't articulated, but now that Devin said them out loud her pride could get in the way preventing a burst of spontaneity that makes her say ... "fuck it let's sign now, take me where we need to go to *ahem* 'sign the contract' ." So maybe the thought I had wouldn't even work. That said I would like any pretense that has Kimmy going to find a place to sleep with Devin, lol.

JamesIsAsleep

Patreon ate my reply ... one too many edits ... fuck

JamesIsAsleep

I also did so very much enjoy when Kimmy noted the contrast between how Devin is treated by the bartender versus hypothetically how Josh would have been treated. And I also did enjoy Kimmy taking a moment to assess Devin's good looks and style, she is thirrrsty ...

JamesIsAsleep

they aren’t going back to Devin’s apartment. They are going to a hotel. Devin doesn’t need any tricks. If Kimmy was offended by his intentions she could have left the bar... She didn’t, so while she might say she is offended her actions are saying she’s at least interested in Devin’s vision.

Chinookfan72

I was picturing an asian actress like Kimmy as Constance Wu (HUSTLERS) or Yunjin Kim (LOST) :)~

BNR

I don't know, I think KT is starting to get into it now, lol. This is Kimmy: https://giphy.com/gifs/peteandpete-season-1-episode-3-xTiIzKVh4u2WbbBhNS I am a big, enormous fan of the moments when KT's alpha males and females are circling each other, as I've said many times before, and this another great moment in a KT story. I hope it lasts a little longer, because it's only getting started in earnest. I have to say, I think Kimmy must be thirsty considering how easily she was disarmed by the "I won't get a gold star for finishing fast,' comment. Really, Kimmy? Lol. Is Kimmy going to actually go back to Devin's apartment? I think the only way it happens now that Devin was so crystal clear about his intentions is if Devin has some additional trick up his sleeve. Like maybe he can convince Kimmy to sign tonight, but "sorry Kimmy, I left my paperwork at my apartment ..." She was impressed by his big fat pen so maybe he can make her use that to help seal the deal :).

JamesIsAsleep

How could he say it’s ok?

Tim ziegler

Tim ziegler

It felt to me more like "You’re Kimmy Chang if you work for me” or at least that sound better to my ears. Plus I understand his business "needs" outside of what his cock "wants." And i'm fine with the longer tease actually. I like that she is strong but doesn't fully trust herself alone with Devin. I like that part. My other observation is that she might be having to decide between her career and starting a family. At least her rational thought process thinks they are mutually exclusive. It wouldn't be a KT book if they actually were though... BTW, Nice tease ending KT!!!!!!! :)~

BNR

I thought that might be the case :). Sharing notes just on the off chance it's helpful.

Glaucon

Woops. The talk to Josh one needs to be fixed, but the Devin line was meant to be like that (he dropped the if)!

KT Morrison

it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.. Will Josh go to where her phone is? Will he just sit and stew, and then unblock devin’s number, figuring she is with him? How far will Kimmy and Devin go? All good stuff... I just hope if Josh goes to spy we don’t get the scene through his pov.

Chinookfan72

Things are heating up fast! Kimmy pretty clearly wants this as much as Devin but can’t admit it to herself. We’ll see if her willpower cracks tonight and to what extent. I think there might be missing words or punctuation in “You want to talk Josh first” and “You’re Kimmy Chang you work for me”
