Devil In The Waters, Book 5, Chapter 1 (complete)

So, yeah, we're into Book 5 now (not 4, ha ha)! I chopped the last book in half because it was too long, and I might take the opportunity to flesh some of the scenes out to make each of the books feel richer.

Let's get into 5! . . .

***

Ten after eleven, she fucking gets home.

There was the sound of her high-heeled shoes on the tiles of the foyer, the banging of her keys. Then a space of silence. Probably looking around the apartment and wondering where he was. Well he was in bed. Yeah, it was only a bit after 11 P.M., but the day had drained him. Plus there was no way he wanted to have the conversation he wanted to have tonight. So as far as his wife was concerned, he was sleeping.

More clicking, moving around the kitchen now. Yeah, don’t hurry in here. The fridge rattled. And while he’d been laying on his side looking out the apartment windows at the night sky, now he rolled over so he wouldn’t have to see her face when she came in.

And it took minutes for her to come into the bedroom. At last though, she did, not being quiet. The door opening, and her whispering, “Josh.” He didn’t answer.

She was quiet for a long moment, standing in the bedroom doorway and staring at him. Then she was moving, the sound of her heels quiet on the bedroom’s carpet, going into her walk-in closet, closing the door and turning on the light. At least she was considerate not to blast light in his face and wake him up.

She was in there for minutes, then came out, walking across his field of vision, and he regarded her through very narrow eyes. She looked his way, but now headed into the bathroom. She was wearing her pajama shorts and her big Queens sweatshirt. She closed herself in the bathroom.

Now he rolled over the other way, returned his gaze to the nighttime sky. After 11 o’clock at night. That’s when she comes home. After she was out with another man . . . He knew what she’d done.

The shower clicked on.

Wash it all off, Kimmy. Flush Devlin’s smell off your skin . . .

Then the shower turned off again. What was she doing—washing her feet or something? The toilet flushed. The bathroom door opened, the frame of the window where he looked lighting up for a second before she turned the bathroom lights off.

He listened to her soft bare feet pad to the bed . . .

The remorse and regret had been intense once she’d left the Royal York suite. The IV treatment and the B12 shot had indeed been reenergizing. The wobbliness had gone from her legs, but she did ache from Devlin’s huge size.

She’d been confident with Ellie, enjoying the luxury treatment, the perks of the job as it were. Ellie had gone, she’d dressed, then hustled out of the suite. The door closed behind her and locked. That was it. Over. Even if she wanted back in, she couldn’t go in there now. And that was where the deed had been done. The door was locked, the act severed off from her life.

But as complete as she thought that sexual transaction with Devlin may have been, it was heading from the luxury suite past the floor’s concierge to the elevator doors the felt the deep dread. Because while the act was done, now she was heading home to her husband. You could compartmentalize your actions, but there would be residue. Mental and physical. She hadn’t showered. Hadn’t showered, because she had to get home. She planned to slip into the apartment, say hi, get in the shower quick. All she wanted was to get home. Then as the elevator descended, it gave her that sinking feeling in her stomach. And the sinking feeling got heavier knowing she was heading home after officially cheating on her husband. She’d danced around the truth all this time. All the things she’d already done with Devlin weren’t really cheating, she’d told herself. He’d hardly got his dick in her at the party. He’d only put his fingers in her in their apartment. In the cargo container as well. And in his car outside the gym, sure, he’d got it inside her, but not deep. He didn’t thrust. Not official sex. All that was over now. The act was done. And, yes, it was one time only, but that didn’t change the fact that there was no going back now. It was done.

Back in her car, she sat wondering whether or not to put the clean panties back on. Pulled them out from under her car seat, held them bundled in both hands, fidgeting, running her thumbs over the satiny feel. Her heart started to thud with fear. Fear that Josh would know and hate her. She wouldn’t be able to stand that. For the sake of sanity, she’d concentrated on the most imminent struggle: You didn’t shower and the panties are clean. If you showered you could put them on. You didn’t. Now if you put them on, they’ll smell like sex. And you may leak in them. Leak Devlin’s semen. You can’t put them in the hamper then. Are you going to do laundry as soon as you get home? Are you going to go in without panties? Sure, that would be great. Josh desperate for you to get home, starts getting frisky right in the foyer like he did last time and you’re not wearing panties. The best plan she could surmise was to drive home without them, put them on in the apartment parking lot and hope she didn’t leak before she got to the bathroom and threw them in the hamper. One small hurdle crossed made her feel slightly better. But driving through the city only made her feel worse. Out of place. This wasn’t really her city. She knew Kingston. She knew London. Toronto, only a little. North Toronto, where her office was, was a little more familiar. Downtown was the place now for her and Devlin. And then before she made it to the DVP something occurred to her. Mookie’s Restaurant, in Cabbagetown. She and Josh’d had a date there. It was a brightening thought, and she drove there feeling happier. And it certainly felt good to establish that connection in her mind with her husband. She parked street side, and looked in the quaint doors of the restaurant remembering that night that she and Josh—not fully committed as a couple, still just dating—had gone there. Josh paid, a nervous gentleman, and she couldn’t remember what they ordered. What else they’d done that night. They’d come down here for a movie or a show? . . . Maybe a movie. But she definitely sat with him right in the front windows, and she imagined that fond youthful time with Josh fucking Waters playing out behind the glass. A guy she really really loved. The storm clouds broke, her features wriggling and squirming and she bawled. Sobbed and heaved and cried into her hands until the tears seeped through her fingers to the backsides of her hands. It was cleansing. She tidied up with napkins, knowing she couldn’t take long because all she wanted was to be home with Josh, starting the Leaf, heading out of Cabbagetown and getting on the DVP.

Once she was on the DVP she was already feeling better. She’d had that reunion (at least in her memories) with the guy she loved. Putting the city and the fact she cheated on him behind her, she headed home. Couldn’t wait to get home. But if she thought the dread was bad walking from the luxury suite to the elevators at the Royal York, it was worse walking from the apartment elevators to the apartment door. She was taking careful steps, hoping she wouldn’t leak Devlin’s semen into her clean panties before she got them to the hamper. Came in the apartment, and it was dark and empty and everything closed off. She knew he was home and that he hadn’t gone out. That meant he was in bed. And that sunk her heart. She’d really hoped to have opened the apartment door to a cacophony of machine guns and video games and Josh and his friends yelling and having fun. Hoped maybe even Sophie would be here to.

It was too much to hope for. She didn’t deserve for to be so easy. She just hoped it wasn’t hard.

Josh’s absence provoked a distinct fear the apartment was dark because he somehow knew what she’d done. The most likely was he was mad because she was late without letting him know she would be so late. So he’d gone to bed early to send her a message. Probably watched her on Find My Phone to know when he could turn the TV off. But what if it was worse than that? . . .

But how would he know what she’d done?

Another taunting text from Devlin?

But Devlin didn’t send that text. She believed Devlin.

And that’s where she was, believing the asshole who hurt her husband when her husband was a young man. Disbelieved her husband because she knew him, knew his nature. Loved him, but knew him to be hyperbolic. He told her Devlin texted taunts to stop her from seeing Devlin. He’d wanted her not to take the job at Stone Brokerage, but wanted her to be the one to say she wouldn’t. Now it was too late.

Shit, and Josh was right—it was a terrible idea for her to take the job. Look what happened.

She lingered in the kitchen, gathering the nerve to go into the bedroom fearing she would find him not pretending to be asleep but with arms folded, furious, ready to kick her out. Maybe he was in the bedroom right now packing her bags.

Provoked by the awful thought of poor Josh throwing her things into her open suitcases was a particular image: his puzzled face wondering why something in particular was missing from her belongings.

What if he knew you wore the lingerie to work today—to the after-work meeting with Devlin Stone?

Oh holy shit, she thought, pressing her palm to her forehead in the hallway, heart thudding, pins and needles working in her hands and feet.

***

She’d opened the door bedroom door with great fear over what she’d find. Relieved to see Josh’s huddled shape under the bedcovers. Stood and watched him for a long moment before whispering his name. He ignored her.

She changed in the closet, pleased to find her panties looking fresh, brought her things into the bathroom dressed in her sleeping sweats. Panties made it to the hamper without being mussed.

But when she turned on the shower, the hissing water signifying in her mind the act of getting clean, she heard it through Josh’s ears. Josh would know why she was showering.

Sweatshirt pulled up, she examined her body, looking for marks, stains, or any sign. She wiped toilet paper to clean in her creases. There was a musky smell but it was too late now to wash it away. One ass cheek was redder than the other, but Devlin’s hand mark had faded. Her eyes looked hooded and sad, her vibrant post-fucking color had paled and she looked pallid now. She forced a smile on her face and didn’t like it.

Now she padded to bed. Josh was turned in the opposite direction, facing the apartment window. Purposely showing her his back. She slipped under the covers, worked herself close to him but didn’t touch him. She watched him sleep for a while—or at least pretend to sleep—his chest and shoulders moving up and down as he breathed. It would be better to close her eyes and go to sleep. Deal with this in the morning. An innocent wife back from a late business meeting, tired as heck, needing her sleep, finding her husband already in bed, crawling in next to him and passing out. They would deal with it in the morning. But she missed him. Her heart broke for him. Broke for him in this weird way—like he was her best friend and she just found out his wife had cheated on him. But she was the wife, too. She wasn’t two beings. She was one. She was his friend and his wife. She put her hand out, crawling it under the covers and finally resting her hand on his back, thumbing the frayed cotton of his old Coldplay T-shirt that he slept in. It was a tender and warm gesture. Not to be construed as the act of a cheating wife, but the act of a wife who knew she was out too late without sending word. Knew she’d done wrong.

But Josh’s answer was horrifying.

“Don’t touch me.”

She snapped her hand back, her chin dimpling and her lower lip quivering. Tears filled her eyes. Josh knew. She didn’t know how, but Josh knew she’d cheated on him.

Comments

Shocking. Just a short sentence by Josh, but I didn't see that coming. Love it. Now diving instantly into the next chapter.

My point too....for me to find a story sexy I need to like the characters, Devlin and Kimmy both are not coming across very likeable at this point. If Kimmy could tell Josh the truth at some point, that might swing things the other way.

Anjali

I’m starting to lose interest sorry KT but I’ve said before I have to like the characters good or bad and i just don’t! Kimmy is manipulative liar ,Devlin is a asshole, and my last hope looks like he’s not going to man up and who could stay with a spouse who would humiliate you with a person you hate.

Tim ziegler

The really interesting thing in this story relates to the hidden interaction between Josh and Devlin. It’s lurking back there in that drunken conversation at the reunion not explaining the interaction between those two. High School, the texting, the scene in the tent, Devlin’s pontification to Kimmy on Josh - none of it makes complete sense yet. We all have different interpretations of what’s going on. That air of mystery is absent from almost all the erotica I’ve read. I’m genuinely interested in seeing the story unfold and finding out the backstory. It’s a real story, with porn. What’s better than that? My compliments.

CSH

If there is a reason for Josh and Devlin to interact then maybe. But the new texting would have to be above board with Kimmy knowing and carefully walk a line. It would have to not give Josh any rational reason to show Kimmy. It’s reasonable to have contact with your wife’s boss, even if you hate him but he can’t be sending messages saying “I screwed your wife”. If for no other reason than divorce court. Maybe something that is superficially innocuous but could be understood by Josh (and now Kimmy) as an insult and implying they are having sex.

CSH

i agree with this, but is there a world where Devlin can get Josh not to tell Kimmy.. Because the communication can continue as long as Kimmy is aware it’s happening... I don’t think the communication is happening now.. But I think there are a couple scenarios where the communications can start back up soon.

Chinookfan72

Yeah, I think we’re in the same place. She can rather easily convince him he’s wrong. Plus, “high school was so long ago. We are adults now. Let’s all put all that behind us!” Lol.

CSH

great idea CSH, we do need more Josh and Devlin interactions... Perhaps Kimmy will be full of Devlin whilst they are having dinner. Just to clarify my comment above by “master level” I was talking about how throughly she wins the argument, not that she would need to be a genius to win.

Chinookfan72

An excellent idea! Somebody tell KT.

Donkatsu

Above was deleted by me.

DavidnDaria

And then tell him they have to invite Devlin for dinner to clear away the old resentments!

CSH

She doesn’t have to be a genius to win, he wants to lose. Alternately apologetic and aggressive will do nicely. Nobody expresses outrage as well as the guilty. As I said above, I’d like to see her manipulate him into apologizing for whining like a little bitch after she spent all night working her ass off. Maybe she can get him to make it up to her somehow.

CSH

agreed I’m hoping for a master level debate thrashing at the hands of Kimmy... After she has won the argument and realizes she’s getting away with it I hope she does something to rub Josh nose in it..

Chinookfan72

The meeting lasted for 3 hours, she got there at six texted him she’s on the way at 9. She’ll have to explain why it took 2 hours to get home after the meeting, but I’d imagine she can come up with something. That IV treatment is used for people to recover from a hangover so I’m thinking she could use the IV as the explanation for the time between the text and getting home (honey you know I don’t drink, but I had a couple cocktails and Devlin suggested I get an IV so I’m not feeling hungover tomorrow at work cause I got a lot to do.) Sure there could be more evidence on Kimmy’s body should Josh care to examine her throughly, but it’s not going to be obvious things he’ll detect from the bed during this conversation, and I’d imagine Kimmy isn’t going to let Josh examine her to find out... The one caveat to this would be if KT wants to use this moment as more humiliation for a Josh and say Kimmy gets him to clean her up..

Chinookfan72

KT was kind of gaslighting us with that poll as well since Josh both spied and then went home to sulk. Nice!

CSH

They are in bed, in the dark. Lots of marks on her maybe but will he see them? I doubt it. Especially if they go to sleep. If past is prologue, he also may be nursing a boner which usually doesn’t help your rational arguing power and is a good reason for him to turn away and keep the lights off. That boner also may be her final clue that it’s not the fighting as such but his fears of her and Devlin that are triggering his erections. I expect she’ll be soothing and apologetic about her meeting taking so long. Pretend to think that’s why he’s upset. That will actually reassure him since he’ll take it as evidence she was really working. Even if he somehow finds the courage to confront her about his suspicions of Devlin then as chinookfan said, she’ll realize he’s got no proof, just fear. After reassuring him of her undying love and being all apologetic about having to come home so late, she can sweetly maneuver him into apologizing to her for whining like a little bitch after she had to work so hard all night. Or she can just grab his boner and win that way.

CSH

KT may surprise us but Devlin contacting Josh at this point won't help Devlin's long game. If he has a long game. It would be "batshit crazy" as you put it!

RCH

Seriously (but why? this is fun!), we all hope that Kimmy treats us to yet another amazing escape and gaslighting tour de force. How else are we going to get the amazingly detailed sex scenes. As much as I really want to know about Kimmy's mentoring at the knees of Carol (and Grace, of course), Kimmy really has to be able to work this gig herself if she wants the show to go on; and she does! Josh, I don't care how good you were in HS debate class or freshman philosophy, you are about to be treated to a galactic level of sophistry and deception. Good luck.

Donkatsu

Remember, Kimmy stinks of sex, has Devlin still inside her, likely has marks on her wrists... a faded, but still there red butt... So, there is evidence if Josh is so inclined to find it. Oh, and where is the lingerie? :) Not that Kimmy can't or won't deny everything so far, it's going to be a far less plausible denial this time. Three hours? More like five... :) I'm wondering how she's going to explain away the mark for the IV and the shot (B12 injections are intramuscular so no mainlining it via the IV).

DavidnDaria

I think the way out of it for Kimmy is simple..I’d be shocked given Josh history for him not to apologize immediately after saying don’t touch me. His response here is out of character for him, and I think it’s telling we got it from Kimmy’s perspective and not his. Once he apologizes it’s going to let a Kimmy take a breath and she’ll realize Josh doesn’t know she’s cheated he only thinks she has.. She’ll realize he has no proof of the act so I expect a simple explanation of the evening followed by some gas lighting to make him feel bad for doubting her. A three hour business meeting, while long, is not unheard of.

Chinookfan72

He’s begging Kimmy to prove him wrong because he doesn’t have the strength to face being right. He’s a good guy, loves his wife and would likely make a good dad, but strength ain’t his strong point.

CSH

I expect Josh may have simply convinced himself that Kimmy was cheating and his reaction is based on that alone. We and Kimmy know it’s true but he doesn’t. She will win that argument handily if she’s calm and restrained. She’s going to straight up lie to him and convince him he’s paranoid. I think the texts are over. If Devlin texts Josh again, Kimmy has no argument for keeping her job. When your boss is sending text messages to your husband claiming he is screwing you then either he’s telling the truth or he’s batshit crazy. Either way you need to get another job.

CSH

After reading many of these chapters I feel like I’m in my car and have deviated from the prescribed route hearing the disembodied voice from the GPS saying “recalculating, recalculating…”. It is pretty clear now that Kimmy considers Josh her best friend (although we haven’t been given much information on their interactions outside of the Devlin deal, one of the last chapters has Kimmy recalling a very pleasant Sunday afternoon spent together after a tiff) and one whose wife has cheated on him…and she is the wife. This doubles the angst so I think from now on I’m just going to hang on for the ride.

TF

It is clear that a lot is going on behind the scenes in this great chapter and ongoing work. Many things that KT knows that we don’t: 1. Has Devlin been communicating in private with Josh? 2. Has Josh been contacted by Amy, Karina? 3. How much does Karina know? 4. How much business Martin’s company does with Devlin’s firm and how this affects Kimmy’s view of Josh? 5. How often do Carol and Kimmy meet? These nuggets and more are available only to subscribers to KT’s double secret patron category (thank you Dean Woermer)

Donkatsu

I think you're right about the weakness thing. Also, the fact that he's in bed indicates he wants to avoid confrontation, that he's accepting, but still pissed. It's a protest of sorts, "Yes, I know you cheated, but I'm still here, I want proof." That Kimmy didn't even try to cover up her scent is going to provide the proof. Don't know if Kimmy is even going to try to weasel out of it. How can she? She stinks of sex. Plus, she got that vitamin B-12 shot. If you've ever shopped at Costco, they sell this product called "Zipfizz". Zipfizz is a powder you add to a bottle of water, shake up and drink. It's a vitamin B-12 blast, literally. I used to drink it when I was working late. It's like what I think taking amphetamines is like--wired. Kimmy is likely wired as all get out. She's not going to sleep anytime soon. Yeah, there's going to be a discussion of some kind. Probably not until we find out how Josh spent the rest of his night, though.

DavidnDaria

Even if he did I trust Kimmy will find a way to assuage his worst fears. I love the cat and mouse. Wouldn’t mind a role shift eventually.

Wess

oh interesting, or maybe the texts did restart like Kimmy dismissed?

JamesIsAsleep

i think Devlin may have paid Josh a visit.

Tracey52

The next chapter will define which way the story goes,

Tracey52

One thing I will say, the whole 'sulking, waiting before she decides to touch me' is a little weak, in my opinion. Both knew Kimmy knew he was awake laying there, and when she decides to lay an arm on him that's when he let's her know how upset he is? I'd like to say I would have pulled that off better but I don't know if I would have, lol. I am wondering if Kimmy weasels her way out of this one, too ... She does feel really bad, and seems to think theres no way out of this one in the last sentence, but maybe the discussion could give her some leverage.

JamesIsAsleep

Speechless! Most powerful chapter yet!

RCH

I feel so connected to these characters. Kimmy's ruminations followed by Josh's reaction to her touch - priceless.

Wess

It's a cuckold story. Remember that, Dave. Remember it. Don't let what you would do, not what you did, cloud your logic. Josh loves Kimmy. Kimmy loves Josh? How can a woman do that? You know how. Just breathe Dave, just breathe. Pink Floyd time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7L73htRYUA Perfect song for this, no? So sad. So very sad. Angry. Powerful, KT. "Don't touch me."

DavidnDaria

No need to wait... let’s do it now. Buck up Kimmy, time to stick to your guns.

CSH

Im at the edge of my seat ... Starting book 5 out with a bang lol

JamesIsAsleep

hmmm.. what happens come morning?
