Schrodinger's panties aside, if I were king of the universe, I would reveal the panties at the very, very end of the story so that readers can enjoy the mystery ride but then finally have a definitive answer to avoid endless and fruitless debate. That might be a hot take, but if I never knew about the panties I don't know how I'd sleep at night.
