Most 80s fantasy movies had scary elements by today's standards. This was pretty much a cult classic when it came out. I am in the camp of loving this movie despite its flaws. The art direction and design is just incredible. The art concept for Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal (another epic Jim Henson fantasy film), was by Brian and Wendy Froud. Very much their style. Toby, the baby in this film, is their son. So, he was probably used to being surrounded by strange creatures.
