I tried the gateway tapes a while ago and was shocked to realize that binaural beats are what I use when tuning my guitar. I did the gateway tapes with earbuds and realized that this was actually a neurological effect not an actual physical acoustic phenomenon. On the guitar, as I turn the tuning peg, the frequency quickens as the notes become further apart, but slows and then disappears when in tune. This is quite a normal way to tune and when I mentioned this is neurological to other players they too were surprised. Doing the gateway tapes, the two tones cannot mix in the air because of the earbuds; and the volume is so low, I don’t believe they are blending acoustically in the head. Very weird and vaguely unsettling realization after tuning for 40 years.
