Doomscroll: Yung Chomsky

Welcome to Doomscroll. This is the lifting episode and we’re all gonna make it! For episode #07 I sat down with my good friend Yung Chomksy to discuss the culture, politics and online mythology of weight lifting.

This is a listener supported show. If you want me to make more episodes, you can support the project by becoming a monthly paid subscriber. Your support allows me to keep doing this work:

Yung Chomsky is the producer of TrueAnon, creator of the mobile app Phomo, a low key menswear influencer (follow him on IG) and a natural athlete with 16 years of experience. We discuss:

There is a steep learning curve from when most people start lifting (and take terrible advice from memes), up until you actually know what you are doing. In most cases, this is a frustrating process with a lot of trial and error. If you’re currently eating 4 raw onions, drinking a gallon of milk and slonking 36 eggs per day, this episode might help to get your life back on track.

We explore Yung Chomsky’s journey through various online communities and unpack the implicit and explicit philosophies of these groups. We sort the facts from fictions and discuss the tenuous connections between physical exercise and far right politics.

Its also necessary to mention that Yung Chomsky is aesthetic AF. Like god damn. He went from being a skinny guitar nerd to peaked natty physique. Its an incredible and inspiring journey. You can read about his recent program on Substack:

I’m 39 years old and 6’ tall. My training approach has shifted more than once, but I’ve been lifting for 16 years. This year, I began my fat-loss diet on April 11th, at a bodyweight of 180.4 lbs.

Why You Shouldn't Listen to Your Body

Josh - have you ever read Alphonso Lingis’ ‘Orchids and Muscles’? It was originally published in Journal of the Philosophy of Sport in the mid 80s and is easily one of my favorite pieces of philosophical writing. It’s a Nietzschean meditation on bodybuilding from one of the most unsung weirdos of late 20th century philosophy. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/00948705.1986.9714437

Josh, will there be a way to listen to these in podcast apps? I would love to hear them and dig the guests, but all my pod listening time is audio based 🙏
