a new addition to the gallery collection

Hey, here's some work on the film that isn't by me!

There is a scene in the film set in a gallery, which I finished work on ages ago, except the most prominent painting in it- one with eyeholes (the most important kind of painting in films), was just a placeholder scribble. Now the painting is swapped with one by Zoë!

Zoë and I regularly collaborate on commercial jobs, but this is the first time she's worked on one of my personal projects. The reason I specifically wanted her to make the painting in this scene is because Zoë, unlike me, knows how to paint!

This picture is still digital, and I can make digital art, obviously, but not in an especially painty way. Whereas the film has some close-ups on the eyeholes, where you would be able to see the brushstrokes- so it needed to be made with brushstrokes and blending, and it was a situation I couldn't flood-fill my way out of.

Anyway, I think she did a phenomenal job. The painting could've technically been of anything, but I simultaneously wanted it to be simple and cartoony, but also to vaguely evoke portraiture by impressionists like Degas and Manet- not the vibrant, candid, open-air scenes, but the ones of someone sitting still for a portrait in some poorly lit room. Weird objects sitting in the background but you can't work out why they're there because it's impressionism so they didn't render them fully. They're the uncomfortable flash photographs of the painting world and Zoë has captured it perfectly.

If you hadn't said anything about the painter, I'd have assumed it was you

The gentleman’s hand on her shoulder fills me with centuries of misery. It’s perfect!
