So, this is not in any way your fault, or the fault of any non-whites. There are always going to be racists, homophobes, misogynists, bigots, etc. There always are going to people who make themselves feel better by denigrating other and other groups. What's different now is that the narcissist in the White House AND THE GOP are much more openly catering to these types. White MEN, and I am one, are losing their grip on power here slowly but surely. And when a privileged group begins to realize it is losing power, it can lash out like an angry toddler. Trump and the GOP are tapping into that because POWER matter more than anything else to them. Also, tax cuts and money. It's the same thing that rich whites, many Democrats at the time, did in the South and Appalachian states to keep power: convince poor whites that it's blacks that threaten their livelihood all the while it was the rich running things and keeping them down. Pit the "lower classes" against each other. (This actually goes back to the original British colonizers starting in places like Jamaica. and the plantation system of the time.) They mostly don't even hate you. They just know stoking people who do hate you helps them stay in power. In fact, if every non-white left, they'd be fucked because there'd be no one to blame shit on. Brandon Sanderson wrote in his book Elantris: "The first step in taking over a country is the easiest: find someone to blame." Trump and the GOP have done that: first Muslims, then Latinos. Truth is irrelevant. Power is relevant to them only. So, you did nothing wrong but, also, you cannot do anything to make these people not hate you, me, or anyone. I'm sorry. It's shitty. All I can say is not all white men feel the way they do. I am white, male, and make good money. I will not stop confronting bigotry nor working for a better country. We're all in this together. First of all, stop trying to understand these psychopaths. It is a complete and utter waste of time simply because there is no understanding them. The reason he has no remorse is because he's insane. And trying to understand insanity is going to drive you insane. You didn't do anything to make these people hate you and you can't change anything about yourself(you don't need to anyway) to make these people like you. Some people are just filled with hate and nothing you do will make these people change their mind. Because they're INSANE. But there are a lot of good people out there that are very accepting of everyone but because only the bad stories get reported and none of the good ones do it seems like that isn't the case. But they are out there. I know me saying this isn't going to bring those 22 people back but seriously, it is not worth your time to spend a single thought on the people who did this. You're better off focusing on the positive things in life instead of these assholes who know nothing but hate. I haven't lived in Texas long and the hispanic community isn't exactly big in central Texas, but I do know they are some good people. If the El Paso community is half as strong as the one here is, this won't keep you guys down for a second. So please stop blaming yourself. You aren't the problem. Your community isn't the problem. This broken as fuck country is the problem. If there was halfway decent gun control or proper support for the mentally ill this wouldn't be nearly as big of a problem. Which is why people need to get out and vote. Then we can get people like Mitch god damn McConnell out of office and we can try to begin to fix it. And who's talking shit about Beto?! I'll fight 'em.
