Episode 675: Shinobi - Mission 1

SMOKE BOMB! That's right, Diamond Feit is in the room with you and you had no idea until this very second. That's the power of the Ninja, powers I necessarily channeled as host of this podcast about Sega's premier shadowy assassin franchise, Shinobi.

In typical Retronauts fashion, Stuart Gipp, Thomas Ni©kel, and I put together a retrospective on what we thought was a long-dormant series literally hours before Sony announced a new entry coming this August. Fear not, for there are many Shinobi games to talk about yet; this is but Mission One which addresses the early years of Joe Musashi—and like Joe, we shall return!

For those curious, here's a link to a 2017 Brazillian interview with Yutaka Sugano I mentioned on the air.

it remains up in Japan, at the very least?

Looks like the Shinobi Sega Ages game on Switch is delisted.

I’m astonished I haven’t done this yet.

Thank you for giving the Master System the respect it deserves in this episode. As the only kid I knew with one, I couldn't get my friends to understand how cool the console was. It supported 3D games, had a larger color palette and better sound capability than the NES, and your Master System collection could be played on a Genesis or Game Gear with an appropriate adapter. As mentioned in the episode, it could even roughly approximate 16-bit titles in the hands of the right developer. Please do a dedicated Master System episode.

My childhood dentist had a collection of Vectrex games to play! It's the only place I've ever seen them.

They had the arcade machines, a few TVs and jungle gym stuff for the real little kids.

your orthodontist had VIDEO GAMES?? Never in my life have I experienced a waiting room with anything besides magazines or occasionally comics.

Diamond Feit

The original Shinobi was one of a couple arcade machines my orthodontist had in his waiting room in the mid 90s (along with Centipede, Double Dragon and Donkey Kong). Even on free play i never made it far.
