Applejack has become harsher, bigger and more jaded over the last six years. The left side of her face is badly burned from an incident that cost her the use of her eye … and her brother and sister. Now she works as a mercenary for hire, using her formidable bucking skills in exchange for bounty money against the kinds of terrible ponies and criminals who have taken root in Equestria while Princess Luna struggled to learn how to be a good ruler without Celestia to guide her. Twilight is still reeling from this news when a malnourished, sickly earth pony walks in. Except that this earth pony … is Rainbow Dash and no amount of her usual bravado is enough to disguise how much she has changed in her own way since she and Twilight last saw each other.
