After fighting with her mother, Luster Dawn runs away from home. Beset by doubts over her life, her future and a destiny everyone else seems to have decided for her with no input from herself, she makes a snap decision and agrees to let Zecora's new student, Kinyongo,  test an old spell on her that will make all her problems go away and show her what her true destiny should be. Unfortunately, to Luster's horror her destiny is apparently exactly what everyone else said it was: it has turned her into an alicorn ready to inherit the crown from her mentor, Twilight Sparkle. Now Luster must cope with her new wings and figure out whether she has it in her to resist destiny itself - and whether treading her own path is worth giving up a pony who may well be the love of her life.
