Not everyone dislikes Book 4 and I really liked S4 a lot for a lot of interesting story lines and characters. Best approach is just dive in because you love the show and keep an open mind! I loved this reaction. I think I can say that the scene with Drummer in the elevator shaft had everyone shouting and screaming at their TVs as well! Can't say more as you are reading the books now but I do love how the writers throw things at all of us, readers and non readers alike! So glad you have made this journey and looking forward to more!

Great react mate. This show as you point out is kind of special in a lot of ways. First off one of the authors used to be an assistant to George RR Martin, while the other author was a novelist who also collaborated with George on other projects.
This becomes evident, despite the various similarities to Mass Effect, the show structure of POV chapters to the ever expanding universe is a template of A Song of Ice and Fire. Fully realized characters that stay consistent to themselves and incredible development over the seasons draws a lot of parallels to the tag line "Game of Thrones in space" when they were shopping the show to various networks.
We know how the writing is phenomenal but the other reason why is one of the showrunners is a physicist himself. They brought in all sorts of expert consultants to make sure the show looks the same as the novels described it. From little details like blood clots in zero G (which was confirmed by medical experts), to even the random ramblings that Miller tossed at Holden (which are actually highly advanced math/physics theories in real life), to Tilly's tears pooling in her eyes instead of running down her face... the attention to detail is just unbelievable.
There is no other show like this series. Now that Amazon has secured the rights to the books, the format will change for the better. For one, they no longer have to abide by a certain amount of run time due to advertisements, so we get a lot more of the Expanse. Second, due to this change the writers now can finish one full book arc per season as intended. So now it'll feel a lot more like a classic series with a season premiere and the last episode being the actual finale, instead of waiting for next season.
Lastly, season 4 which is based on book 4 is a bit jarring than all the previous season. S3 is the fan favorite because at the time the showrunners did not have a green light for a season 4. This is why despite the fact events of book 2 ended in episode 6, they cut all the fluff and crammed the entire book 3 arc into the second half of S3. Which made it so that it felt like we got 2 seasons out of a single season if that makes any sense.
Book 4 is kind of a stand alone novel (and the least favorite for book readers), but the adaptation to the show is actually quite excellent (actually better than the books). Mainly because it feels different but also because it's setting up for the next massive story arc that begins in Book 5 (which is bat shit insanely good). So just letting you know, what to expect. Hopefully you finish up S4 and be ready for the S5 premiere like the rest of us.
They finished shooting S5 and even the cast/showrunners are humble bragging it's the best thing they've ever done. So you haven't seen nothing yet mate!
