A lot of the frustrations your having is why I’m not a fan of this season. Some of the choices in terms of storylines just don’t land as well. This episode was filler, we already knew bits to the prophecy in previous episodes so yeah... odd choice. But positives! Well this is more of a sad thing but man I completely forgot about the scene with Kilgarah. He’s been here since the very beginning through thick and thin. It really feels like it’s been so long since season 1 where he and Merlin wouldn’t get along as much. And yes Mordred is such an interesting character and needed. Merlin hasn’t given him a chance at all and it’s quite sad because he’s essentially who Merlin was in the beginning. Someone hiding their true identity. Instead of identifying with him Merlin finds any chance he can to cast doubt on him. It makes sense given his history either trusting Morgana though. I do feel bad for Mordred though because he’s actually being nice to Merlin. Arthur has become more sweet and caring and Merlin burdened with responsibility has become hardened. How the tables turn!

I totally understand your frustration, it was the same for us back then. We were all wondering how the hell they would wrap up the show in the last three episodes with still so much that needed to me resolved. The episode is good, and I love the scenes with Alator. He's a good character that honestly should have had more screentime. It's a shame we did not see Alator join forces with Merlin at some point. Like you pointed out, it doesn't make sense that he did not hide the note from Finna. I'm not sure if he had access to fire or if Morgana was somehow restraining his magic, but he could have swallowed it at least, or even hidden it in the many layers of his clothes... So yeah, for such a clever character to be so careless just doesn't make sense. His death is quite sad though... Morgana is really cruel with him. RIP Alator :( Morgana is pretty scary in this episode, and she's a real threat getting so close to Merlin (without her knowing it). I was hoping/dreading that she would send someone on the roof to check since Finna wrote that she found Emrys and so it would have made sense to check if he wasn't with her when they found her. As to answer your question that Morgana did not sense him or his magic. Well, the previous episode Mordred asked her that if they were in the presence of such a powerful wizzard, surely they would feel his magic. And she seemed to believe or agree with Mordred on that point. So I guess, Morgana may believe that if she's close to Emrys, she will feel his magic. Still, it was pretty close and it's quite frustrating that the episode did not end differently with Morgana finding out the truth. Finna is also a great character and like Alator, I would have loved it if she'd had been introduced sooner. Her scenes with Merlin are just really wholesome. Each time she bows, and he tells her she doesn't need to do that. And even though she's only in this episode, we have no problem believing in her great devotion to Alator and to Emrys. It's like with Daegal, she's a great one off character who deserved more time on the show. Her death is really sad too, but what I love about the scene is how Morgana seems to be both shocked but also a bit in awe at her sacrifice. She may hate this outcome, but I think Morgana respected Finna for remaining loyal to the very end. RIP Finna... This episode also shows how Gaius can sometimes be wrong and in a way Merlin has grown into his own and trusts his instincts more now. And it's true that Gaius's advices have not always been good, main exemple was how he decided to keep Morgana completely in the dark about her magic. And well, how things could have been different if he had been a mentor to her like he was for Merlin?.... So in this episode, he's wrong and takes a bad decision. But it really fits his character because Gaius isn't perfect (he supported Uther during the great purge after all and long after that too) and Merlin even calls him out on it. I do love that it doesn't lead to drama between them though. Merlin understands that Gaius only wanted to protect him. And I love that they hug to show that things are alright between them. Merlin's obsession with Mordred is really dangerous... But in a way, we can't exactly blame Merlin because ever since Mordred has entered is life, the dragon has told him that he would kill Arthur. And at the beginning of the season, he actually saw the horrific vision of the battle and Mordred fighting Arthur and apparently wounding him so badly that Arthur fell. That vision definitely has hanted his nightmares ever since. And it's nothing new that Merlin does everything to protect Arthur no matter what. And even though Mordred doesn't seem like a threat right now, Merlin can't truly trust him. And having Finna tell him that Alator also said not to trust Mordred, well Merlin is bound to be even more weary of him... I agree, prophecies are really dangerous because it's only one interpretation, one possible path. Same with visions. The prophecy at the end really sounds dire... On top of all the worries Merlin already has, now he hears another prophecy that predicts Arthur dying. Poor guy needs a hug and a wam blanket... The scene with Kilgharrah always make me emotional. I remember when I first saw it, I was hit by the realization "this is it, we're starting to say goodbye to the show". It also hits different knowing John Hurt passed away only a few years later. All in all, I still think it's a good episode, and especially a good character piece for Merlin. I like to think it's a "calm before the storm" episode, especially with the ending and Morgana declaring war on Camelot. Next episode things with Mordred heat up... Three episodes left, man, I'm not ready for your reactions to end... Will you consider reacting to "The real Merlin and Arthur"? It's a special documentary they did between season 2 and 3. It's available on youtube and it's almost the same length as an episode. It follows Colin and Bradley on a road trip though Wales looking for proofs that the actual Merlin and Arthur from the legend existed. It's both fun and really interesting if you want to know a bit more about the legend. And Colin and Bradley on a road trip is almost like Merlin and Arthur on a trip in the show ;)
