In fairness to Xue Yang - not that he deserves it - the "long con" is only the first year or so. After that, he just sort of...stayed. And you can see how desperate he is to get that simple, comfortable life back: he goes back and sets out dinner for all three of them (in the novel, he also makes Qing's bed) and sits there waiting for Xingchen to wake up like a doting 1950s housewife wondering when her husband will come home from war. The whole story kills me. I cry about everyone. I cry about Xingchen being too good for the world. I cry about Song Lan and his survivor's guilt. I cry about Qing being so clever but not quite clever enough. And, yes, I also cry about Xue Yang, a fundamentally broken human being, who destroyed the only person who ever cared about him in a moment of frustration, who didn't realize how much he needed that until it was way, way too late.
