Goddess Frigg

The wife of Odin and Queen of Asgaard.

To those of you who have played GoW4 - a game I couldn’t bond with (sorry) You might have noticed the creators decided to make the valid case that Freya and Frigg are one and the same goddess.
Though that is a genuine idea among scholars it’s not actual canon in the Nordic Mythology - then again, little is.

I love Frigg as a character. Because so little is written about her.
Believe it or not, but very little is written about Freya as well. One story about her was written by a Christian priest - much later - and it was an attempt from his side to portray the old gods as barbaric and Freya particularly as a common prostitute (Though the story in hind sight is kinda charming, it’s fair to say the priest failed to cast an ill light on Freya).

I have always found that Freya and Frigg represents two very distinctive parts of womanhood in early ages.
Freya is a free, feisty and happy spirit. Unbound and liberated. Though often portrayed as happy, her story is she is left behind by her Husband Od - yes that is his name - and cries for him when she misses him too much.

I have always loved Freya. As a danish it’s impossible not too. In these days of EM in football/Soccer you hear the danish national hymnal in every sports commercial.
The song has a part where Denmark is portrayed as ‘Freya’s hall’ - in other words, the realm of the Goddess of love.

She is pretty much the National Goddess of Denmark at this point.

Frigg is a different story - in that even less is written about her. She is mostly noted in the tale of the death of Baldur where she asks all living and dead things on the earth and in the sky to swear never to harm Baldur. Neither Bear nor wolf, not stone or iron would ever harm him.

The tale ends with Loki tricking Baldur’s brother Hoeder - a blind god (however odd that sounds) - to shoot an arrow of Mistletoe at Baldur, thereby causing his death - a prelude to Ragnarok.

The tales of the gods of Norse Mythology are very entertaining. I loved them as a kid, I love them today.

Yours truly

The Norse gods are my favorite in terms of mythology. Even more so than the Greeks. I wish all the original stories would’ve been documented by the norsemen, the reasons for not doing so is the fear of there scripture being misused. I would really like to see more Norse gods and goddesses from you😁
