If I were to just add mods like this 3.5:1 gearing box on a stock prusa I'd have to run to my computer, edit the microstepping line to 1/16 as I didn't want to run this at 980 e steps. 490 is much safer for an 8 bit board so testing can be more normal, compile the firmware, then finally flash the new firmware. Maybe 10-15 minutes.
On the duet adding this involved logging into my phone, editing one config line, hitting save, and the printer restarting and I'm good to go. 1-2 minutes max.
