Okay this is just the roughest of sketches, but I wanted you to show you guys how the magic actually starts.
This is about how rough I do it. As you can see the lines are lose, I just try to get a feel of form and shapes, of course often with the use of references. But it’s not only an art form to work over a reference, it’s an art form to FIND the best reference… and sometimes… it’s harder than you think 😂
But as the figures takes forms there is a certain sense of almost… carving out the drawing from the lines - in my case that is.
I know some other artists who don’t bother with the rough sketches, and simply just places another layer on top and works on that. It does sound perfectly reasonable, but I have tried that work form and it didn’t suit me. I could see that from the result.
Also… while rewatching some old Disney movies, I think it’s safe to assume that my anatomy (while not being flawless at all) is anything but criticizable when you contrast it with other illustrative media out there… please… have you seen the waistline of Disney’s princess Jasmine? Now that’s what you call an hourglass figure - just saying 🙌 ❤️
But I digress.
This is the part of the drawing that is actually the most fun and the most frustrating part. Because while you get a lot done, this is where I truly get’s flustered - is there anything here, what am I doing, is this right, DUH no not like that…
It is a pretty hardcore phase… but it’s is also fun. It’s the discovery phase of the drawing. What is it you see… and where are you going?
I hope you like this little window into my work in progress.
I will update with later more clear sketches… and… I think I shall show you the flat colors as well this time around. There is a certain… charm (for me that is) to see how the product moves in the production.
Yours truly
Hammer
