hehehe, we all have them… even goddesses have them. I was inspired by an old children’s book from my youth to draw this image of Freja. I haven’t seen that book in 20 years or so, but I am still looking for it. It was an illustrated book of 3 or so Nordic myths of the Asir.
In one of them, there was the tale of how Thor lost his hammer. The tale had a few great illustrations of Freja. She is not a great part of the tale, but as she is an element of it, she was drawn.
Freja is a goddess who is associated with love and sex, and thus a deity close to my heart. But she has a temper, and she is also a goddess for warfare, so she is NOT to be trifled with. In the book, the illustrations of her, has one where she rages at Thor and Loki for the audacity to ask her to marry a giant/jotun to get Thor’s hammer back. To my memory the book had Freja say something like: IF YOU THINK I AM SO CRAZY ABOUT MEN THAT I WILL MARRY A JOTUN, THOR ODINSON, THEN YOU ARE SORELY MISTAKEN!
The passage has her anger described as terrifying to Thor and Loki. Her bosom was flying, and her priceless jewel Brisengarmen was shattered and her cats hissed at Thor and Loki who were wise enough to make a quick exit.
Freja is a lovely and kind goddess in my books. Warm and gentle, and welcoming. And she is always willing to help, especially if you are polite.
I like to imagine her as gentle and kind as a kitten. But make her angry, and she will turn into a tigress in a split second.
So… best not eat a pudding that doesn’t have your name on it.
Yes Ron, I am talking to you!
Yours truly
Hammer
