Nonono. You got it backwards. Azula IS having Mai and Ty Lee handle THE most important job in the entire coup: SECURING THE KING. They aren't just "sitting around." At that moment, they have already 100% taken control of the king, he just doesn't realize it, yet. Because The Earth King on his own isn't any threat whatsoever, so he doesn't NEED to be physically subdued. However, he is absolutely still a potential threat to Azula if Long Feng were to decide to send a couple of Dai Li agents to grab the king and book it underground or anywhere that she really couldn't follow. The Earth King is probably her biggest bargaining chip, and keeping him secure is absolutely essential until the avatar is taken out of the picture. He does break free, but that's only because Toph invented a completely unprecedented technique that nobody could have predicted (still kinda dumb to leave him unattended in his cell. He IS the king, after all, what are the chances he wouldn't at least have some friends or servants who like him that might try to sneak him out?) But by that point she had already seized the Dai Li, and eliminated Long Feng as an immediate threat, and I don't think that she actually knew he was broken free until well after she had already "killed" the avatar.
Which, by the way, if the Dai Li were still considering turning on Azula, I'll bet that notion completely fucking MELTED the nanosecond they all witnessed her "kill" God-incarnate right in front of their faces.

So, every time the camera focuses completely on Zuko and pans to the side, there’s always some symbolism. I think in this case, it’s the fact that as the camera pans, Zuko almost completely blocks out Katara, nearly letting her disappear in the background, but the camera stops JUST short. I think it’s meant to show that Zuko is willing to hear her, to let her be apart of his journey. At least in that moment, anyway.

It’s just a theory, and probably wrong for many reasons. Flame me for every bit I got wrong, and feel free to end my career for how long I made what ended up being a simple explanation for a meaningless detail pointed out in a funny joke by a funny man.

Ok, look. I’m a new guy. I’m THE new guy. But I have a theory about the seeming lack of moon continuity through the series.
All the of the continuity problems seem to happen AFTER Book One: Water. And if you can recall, some major moon issues happen at the season climax, especially when Yueh gave her power to die and become the moon spirit. Remember, Yueh was not born a spirit, and she probably has no idea how to be a good moon spirit. These leads to my personal theory, if you wish to listen. The moon always being full, at least when we view the night sky from the POV of the Gaang, is Yueh watching over them with intent. Especially Sokka, due to his and Yueh’s romantic interest in each other.
And before you think she shouldn’t care because she’s a spirit now and not human anymore, and she has to do her job and be the moon, I have a rebuttal. We KNOW her crush on Sokka has made her go dangerously close to ignoring her duty, due to her super crushing on Sokka even though she was engaged. She might still love Sokka, so she watches him from the moon, watching him and wishing him the best.

At the end of this episode when Zuko says "how will I know if Father will restore my honor" Azula responds, "Today... you restored your own honor" looking dejected, almost regretful. Im not sure if he fully realizes he made wrong decision, but I think it starts before the war meeting.

Their address was in fact on the poster by the way!
It was 上環九十六區第二百一十七棟 (Shànghuán jiǔshíliù-qū dì-èrbǎiyīshíqī-dòng, “217th house, 96th ward, Inner Ring”).

I'll just quote the Overanalyzer himself, he posted this a few days ago on patreon: "Alright guys, starting with The Guru, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to cut the "Overanalyzer" tier from the credits. I'm extremely thankful to all of you, it's just that theres so many of you now, that the credits are taking up nearly three minutes at the end of a video. What a fucking amazing problem to have, right? So starting next week, it will just be Turbo Overanalyzers and above in the credits to each episode. I hope you can all understand. Thanks guys."

are the "overanalyzer" category patrons intentionally not listed anymore in this and the previous episode, or was that a mistake? just curious

I wanted to give you a heads up about a cool detail. Each book of avatar starts on a boat. It’s such a weird detail. Book 1 katara and sokka on the boat. Book two the gaang on a boat after the water tribe stuff. Book 3 aang unconscious on a boat waking up.

One thing that always weirded me about this episode was how little Airbending Aang used in the battle, especially when his Earthbending keeps backfiring on him.

I think Zuko's "I have changed" line refers to him changing from his 13 year old self who got burned and banished, and now he thinks he's the son his father wanted, unlike before.

I think when Aang and Iroh are tunneling to the catacomb, it's not Aang pushing a boulder or whatever, he's compacting rock to the edges of the tunnel. If you look at his hands, he's pushing up and down at the same time at like a 45 degree angle. That's why you don't see a bunch of rubble when they get to the catacombs

Now that you mention it, Katara getting push back by the fire blasts kinda sets up her standing her ground later when she's facing Hama

what a great episode. I , unironically, love Zuko's relapse because it gives him the truth: what he wanted was bullshit. He didn't have to agonize over turning down returning to be a prince and having his father's approval, he gets it, and it isn't what he really wanted or needed and he gets to wholeheartedly reject it and truly realize what he wants. God I love Avatar so MUCH.

I can explain Iroh's appearance at the gang's house now. I had the same question, but when you pointed out the "address was probably on the flyer" point, it made sense:
Zuko and Iroh were in the lower ring when they first saw the flyer. There were two walls and a bunch of Dai Li and other security between them and Aang. There was no access for Zuko at the time. But when Iroh escaped the palace, he was free in the upper ring and able to stakeout the address he remembered. I think that all tracks.

(Damn it, I didn't reach fuck you money teir in time for this episode).
Man, I love this episode. I remember catching it when it aired and it blew my mind. And the wait for season three was painful as hell. But I loved it. Out of all the episodes (other than maybe Zuko alone) Crossroads of Destiny stuck with me the most from childhood. I think it definitely pushed me more to appreciating storytelling. So much good character moments. And that final fight! I couldn't pick a better match up than those four! Even as a kid, while a bit devastated, I was never mad at Zuko's turn. Like, even back then, I was like "Of course he would do that! Even though we've been following his journey, he's still a bad guy" which I think was my way of saying "Zuko is such a well written bad guy" and I was still holding faith he would change eventually.
Honestly could go on and on about this season. Seriously. I affles me that it's not universally seen as the best season of Avatar. Because it's almost perfect in every way.

I feel like Zuko’s character development in this episode boils down to what Iroh said in Lake Laogai. He’s realized he’s free to do whatever he wants, but he doesn’t know what he wants so he goes back to doing what he knows. Or, what he wants his family, his father and he knows what’ll get him that, but he’s not trying to capture Aang for his father anymore, but for himself
