Did you like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, or Was The OP Just Good? (Video)

Don't worry, Korra returns next week.

Did you like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, or Was The OP Just Good? (Video)

Comments

It’s much better than the 2003 anime.

Dutch Letters

This dub is the exception. It’s fantastic.

Dutch Letters

It would deeply trouble me for your coverage over this series to be over an English dub.

Justin Yanke

A bit of backstory: the 2003 show went up until episode 28, closely following the manga, when the creator went on hiatus (either got sick or had a kid, can't remember). The production team went: "this show is golden, we can't slow down, make something cohesive!" It ended up going for 51 total episodes. Six years later, after creator finished the manga, the same animation team decides to redo the show from the beginning. What you, Mr. Overanalyzing, have seen is the team doing two big things: "Shonen-ize" the show is the best way I can describe it in one word, making it more flashy and 'comedic' with the 3.5 gags (though the original manga artist/author ALSO very much loved her gags); and scrunch the 28 "canon to manga" episodes that were already made, into the first 14 episodes. Minor Spoilers ahead, nothing main plot-revealing. Both these decisions together fast-forwarded the beginning for people who didn't watch the original story, for the most part. The very first episode is a 2009-anime-only one, to give the Shonen fans a huge hook. BUT, that cut out quite a few side stories that fleshed out important character beats for Edward, Alphonse, and some side characters. Hughes, our overly family-lovey dovey dad, helped Ed and Al study by giving them a steady home during the time and being the first example of a good father figure to them. There's one minor character that "returns" from the 2003 anime into later episodes of the 2009 one, that comments on the 2003 + manga adventure (that, and the character, being things a 2009-only viewer has never seen). Cornello and Tucker, the corrupt priest and dog-maker, have their hideous character arcs shortened from 2-3 episodes a piece into 1 each, which to me took away from the impact their actions had. I have seen both shows, twice, and would say the pacing, action, and overall plot of 2009 are better; while the deep, both disturbing and heartfelt moments that come from 2003 are better. While watching the same first portion of a show twice would be grating to someone, especially who's not inherently into anime, I would state that FMAB (2009) has held its spot as #1 anime of many lists for over a decade for good reason, so at the very least I implore you to watch this show again. And I'm sure MANY viewers would love to see "First Time Analyzing FMAB" for content.

Thomas Howe

Are you really 55?

YaBoyMike

really really enjoyed this, hope to see more in the future

robloxpolycule

Good luck with these

kgblackout1

good point. The OP slaps

Jeremy

For me Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer are the best anime’s I’ve watched so far but I’ve only watched 4 and got into anime this year.

Spooderman

At first I was disappointed not to see Korra S3, but this was great. I hope this becomes the next series after Korra’s done with.

A X

VINLAND SAGA I am begging you I also am very picky but I’ve even READ the Vinland manga it’s so good and I can’t even read!

Daniel Sanders

Bro, I'm the same, don't like Anime, BUT, attack on titan is fucking AMAZING. You should absolutely try it out.

cameron lowrie

Brotherhood is honestly a great show, and while there are a bunch of buds in anime that are absolute garbage, I think brotherhood has a really good dub. Also you're the first person I've ever heard mention Bring Me The Horizon outside of my partner so that was cool

Caloom

I honestly think you doing an over analyze to both versions of the show would be fascinating to watch!!

Jonathan Sosa

Its def worth watching, especially if you watched the 2003 anime first.

Brisken

Oh, Roy's fireballs are easy, but I do admit its not actually explained in the show (not this one anyway, its explained in the 2003 version and manga iirc). He's not turning the air into fire, he's redirecting oxygen from the air around him into a highly condensed stream towards his enemies and then ignites them using his gloves (his gloves create sparks that ignite the oxygen). You'll see what I mean if you get to a later episode.

Brisken

Then there's me and my friends, who think 2003 was amazing, and Brotherhood, while good, isn't as good as the Manga.

Brisken

Brotherhood is better

StoneyBowlz

Bro, imagine if he did overanalyzing death note or Jojo's bizarre adventure

Wapiti .

oh i know, im not even a huge soul eater fan myself, but the soul eater intros go hard so i feel like it suits the concept lol

orisghost

Watching Full Metal Alchemist first gives you a great appreciation for FMA: Brotherhood

Good review! Would love to hear your thoughts if you continue the show. I also second Mob Psycho 100 as a good candidate for this series. It's written by the same author as One Punch Man. And I know you didn't ask, but here's some other shows I think you might like, if you want to continue exploring anime: Cowboy Bebop - undisputed classic. Feel like you've probably already seen it, but if not it's a must watch. Almost zero anime nonsense, great writing and animation, super cool world and banger soundtrack. 1 season 26 episodes Space Dandy - Absurdist comedy. Directed by the creator of Bebop but very different. might be interesting if you want to explore what anime has to offer in terms of legit comedy (not just tired gags and over the top reactions) 26 episodes Gurren Lagann - Big Robots, bombastic action. Has a fair amount of tired anime tropes and humor, but mostly employs them intentionally as genre conventions to be exploited or subverted. Might not be your taste but I think in terms of theming and writing it holds up to scrutiny. 1 Season 27 Episodes Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Beautiful, contemplative. Once again, pretty light on anime nonsense, and takes a unique approach to a classic Tolkienesque fantasy adventure. It focuses on an Elf with a long lifespan who starts to realize she's taken a lot of her adventures for granted and starts trying to appreciate the humans in her life more. It's on going so it might go to shit later but season 1 is great. 28 episodes Delicious in Dungeon - Another modern spin on classic Tolkienesque fantasy. This time with a comedic tone and focus on cooking. I think this one might really turn you off at first as it has a lot of that over the top anime humor, but I think it's actually done really well in a way that's hard to describe. I usually hate reused gags, screaming, and chibi reaction shots as much as you do, but I actually kinda like that stuff in this show. I think, here, that stuff is just the aesthetic, while the underlying humor comes from some genuinely endearing character writing. If you give it a try, stick with it for a bit. 24 episodes

Jeremy

I think the word you’re looking for is “Homunculi” haha

Groceries

This is my favorite show after Avatar! Very cool to see a video about it. :-)

Bailey Collins

He would probably hate soul eater. I don't know how recently you've watched it but I tried a re watch a little while back and it did not hold up imo. The writing (which is one of the things mr. overanalyzer usually cares about most) is pretty bad and it is absolutely FULL of over the top anime™ humor

Jeremy

I really enjoyed the original, but I was too busy for anime when this one came out and never really went back to it. If everyone says it's worth watching, enough that you're going to start covering it I'll start watching inorder to keep up though

Kevin Bartelen

I only watched until the spoiler alert. Up to that point, you pretty much only showed shonen. Is the video actually about shonen and you just use the more generic word to mean the more specific genre or do you actually dislike the entire medium of Japanese animated movies/series for some reason?

Fabian Röling

Agreed

Brennan Warren

I fucking loved this show when I was younger, have been considering re-watching it and then this pops up. I really hope that after Korra you consider doing a full overanalyzing take on something like this. It feels like a good show to branch out from Avatar more while we wait for something new from this franchise.

Scoobert

you should do soul eater!

orisghost

Mobile Suit Gundam War in the Pocket, 8th MS Squad, or UC in general.

Chibi

As an Anime fan I must say that I enjoy FMA:B for the content. Also, most anime is garbage but Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, and Speed Grapher would probably be more your speed.

Chibi

I know the show gets good later but I find the first couple of episodes kind of hard to get through and have stopped me watching it fully multiple times.

Dustin Cummings

This could definitely become a series after kora is done

Robbie Blower

Unfortunate to wait for a week of for Avatar and get this…

Bobbybirb

Good clickbait in the sense that I went in prepared to die on Brotherhood’s hill.

Violet

Super great show, highly suggest

TheSolitaryX

MP100 is sooo good, def agree.

FinnSword

Absolutely one of my favorite anime’s that follows the usual tropes anime comes with. I would LOVE to see an Attack on Titan video from you one day

Paden Hoyd

if you're ever looking for another anime show to do something like this with, Mob Psycho 100 is definitely one worth checking out I fear

Desert Espada

FMAB is my favorite anime, I've watched more times than ATLA

reese_896975

I just rewatched FMAB and Totally Not Mark's review so I'm going into this expecting a totally biased review praising everything😂

That_blind_ginger

This feels like someone looking at 16 chappel and saying the roof looks neat. Like I agree but....

Jason Todd

FMA: Brotherhood is and remains one of my favorite animes for its characters, story, and depth of concepts

JHiggy

u said u didn't watch anime now you have to watch blue eyed samurai

Justin Gregory

I genuinely have been scripting an Overanalyzing FMA:B inspired by you so I’m excited to watch this and see your thoughts!

Midnight

i've actually been thinking about FMAB a lot for the past few weeks for various reasons, so this is funnily timed and yeah i still like it it's good

Desert Espada

You gotta watch invincible if you haven't already. You'd love it!
