[NOBLES] Sir Bertrand MacGuffingham's Backstory

This the backstory James submitted for Bertie. Any content which could give away plot points has been removed.

His parents and elder brother died at sea five years ago, leaving Bertrand "Bertie" MacGuffingham orphaned and the sole inheritor of the ancient MacGuffingham family seat, Oldbotham. An estate which looks grand if ill kept and Bertie has only just been handed the responsibility to maintain his family's name and beget a son and heir.

Berite is a bluff bravo, a prolific bisexual who adheres to the maxim "a woman for duty, a boy for pleasure". A life without struggle has made him very trusting; more worldly characters would say far too trusting. Outdoorsy and mentally uncomplicated, he is a talented sportsman and rides and hunts well. His extremely expensive education (public school, a lower second in Classics from Cambridge) has left him well versed in the social arts and with a knowledge of Latin and Ancient Greek but few practical skills. His average brain has been polished as bright as education could make it: it's still pretty dull.

Bertie's aim is to earn enough money from adventuring to restore Oldbotham to its former glory, beget a son and heir and live a life of pampered luxury. He would like to see England restored to her former glory, but in a fairly loose, aspirational and mushy way: he is essentially selfish and self-indulgent. He is suspicious of intellectuals of a magical or technological bent but childishly pleased with the material products of their work, much in the manner of Toad of Toad Hall.

He is bad with money, and dealing with tradespeople in anything other than persuading them to extend lines of credit. Upon discovering that he was to be forced to take up adventuring, he spent the remainder of his cash inheritance on adventuring training and needlessly expensive adventuring equipment. He was massively oversold by flashy, fast-talking equipment salesmen. He is proficient in the bastard sword, because it is huge, flashy and impressive and his heavy armour was far, far more expensive than it needed to be. He is good with animals and rides well, when not wearing armour as heavy as a battleship.
