MAG 164 - The Sick Village

Comments

I came here to point out the "who was phone"! XD I wonder if there's certain phrases like that one that have been worked into the script as little easter eggs... I can't think of what it was now, but there's been at least one other instance of me going "wait, was that-?" somewhere in the series!

Pia K R

And what an extremely unfortunate time for it to have released. The only thing missing were some(edit: many) people in the village refusing to wear masks.

Moth

this one was creepy in how realistic it is. Yayyyy nationalism.

Rurrie

Did we ever cannon confirm what the K in Martin K. Blackwood stood for? Seeing as it isn't real?

FyreFlye23

This is the first and only episode of TMA I've ever found genuinely disturbing and *gross* and I loved it so much. It actually made me nauseous, and again, I loved it.

nureyev liker

I never find TMA predictable; I love the flip where through the first four seasons Jon is p much "eating" statements (with the fourth season starting to make you wonder how he could even continue ethically to exist if he had to survive on other peoples' pain to do it) and then the fifth season actually got him out of that dilemma! But only by bringing about the apocalypse and filling the whole world with nothing but suffering, such that the fifth season statements are more about the Archivist having far too much suffering to take in and needing to purge himself of it. Also goddamn this episode owned so much haha; apparently nationalism belongs to the Corruption, which makes sense

Alex

This was a really good episode, after the "guidebook" recording, I'd forgotten how much I actually like Helen. Well, as much as one can like a monster.

Heather MacKenzie

This episode made me physically shudder but I also laughed at loud at Martin and "your guidebook." Now I want to know what middle name Martin told Jon. And, of course, Helen so funny in this new world, her going on about the 'adorable couple.' I also just now realized that the voice of Helen is also IMOGEN! This episode is AMAZING.

Rebecca Dupont

Such a good episode! One of my favorites so far!

Marianne weber

I think finding out that Martin doesn’t actually have a middle name threw me more than anything else that’s happened so far this season

daethsticks

I think it may be worth adding dermatillomania to the self-harm warning. Thanks for your time

heliu

This one hit waaaaay too close. Even before covid this one was hecking prophetic.

Lasgalendil

I've added a racism tag to go along with xenophobia.

Rusty Quill

We have done now.

Rusty Quill

We've added a self-harm CW for that bit now.

Rusty Quill

"who was phone" :D while Helen gave me bad vibes this time, I do love that she too ships it.

ledgem

Helen has Amy Poehler camcorder dancing in Mean Girls energy and I'm so grateful

Kat Veldt

It's kind of terrifying how real this episode got. The xenophobia and sickness. I don't think you guys could have predicted how hard this episode would hit. God, we're on a good run of episodes this season.

Shannon Callahan

Too real, Mr. Sims. Too real...!!! Shirley Jackson & Covid woven together, so well done.

Panko

Wow that was amazing and ROUGH, but my final thought is: MY GOD I LOVE HELEN.

Jordan L. Hawk

First, just like everyone else, HELEN. She is my FAVE, just like Michael before her, and I have missed here. Second, I really have to admire Jonny more and more each and every episode for just how good his writing is. Especially the way he so seamlessly uses horror and comedy together. It really is stupendous. And I agree with some of the others, he really must be some sort of clairvoyant or avatar from some dark being. This episode is just uncanny.

romi רוֹמִי

Oh my gods, a tma video game would be AMAZING

romi רוֹמִי

This is such a great episode!!

Adrian Hero

Incredible work as always, guys—also, I’ll be Helen’s BFF 👌

ray brantley

Holy crap Jonny just wow I'm continually amazed by your writing

Dez

How dare you make me cry every episode from the sheer existence of these gays.

Luci Bean

Self harm is in the cw list now

YamiKakyuu

That was great, horrifying, and hilarious. Loved Helen, loved Jon scandalized over Martin's middle name.

K. C. Millheiser

And a cigarette in the other hand.

NotAVandyGirl

He’s saving himself for the next fluff competition winner.

NotAVandyGirl

The lack of John Amherst is more than alleviated by the presence of Helen. Imogen is so great!!!!! In this and Stellar Firma. Also agree with the fact that Jonny is indeed an avatar of a dread power or perhaps a clairvoyant because damn did he tell the future when writing this or what?!? Shirley Jackson meets The Corruption.

Gilligan Mungus

Guys.. I think we bullied Alex too much and now he wont do the outro anymore D:

therese Amtrup

The little duck noises!

The Octopus Gallery

Quick suggestion, could you add a self harm content warning for this episode? It's a great ep!

Rowan Hannigan

The opening story was really chilling, especially in how it showed the range of options for corruption. Plus, Helen was just charming. Her tone and attitude was almost enough to make me forget she's the embodiment of the fear of insanity. I really hope she shows up again.

Mark Sutton

Your two was my favorite line in this episode. The delivery was just perfect!

Mark Sutton

Excellent ep! In terms of content warnings, maybe add something for self-harm? The scene with Jillian Smith in her home seems like it might warrant it, especially since she uses a razor/blade.

Tess

Damn. That was . . . damn. So good, but ouch. (Not a criticism! Just pained admiration.)

E C Marlowe

can't wait for y'all to announce the tma video game where they gotta battle through each of the fears to get to the final boss sitting up in his evil tower.

danny

loved this ep! idk if this is really under the umbrella of how much content warnings are meant to cover but would it be possible to specify that the xenophobia is against a (presumably) east asian person just since that sorta hits different rn?

Crystal Wang

Oh my goodness this episode is so incredibly well written aaaaaaaaaa

Knockoff Airpods

First: I’ll be Helen’s friend! Second: Wow, the xenophobia part in the plague town was scary close to home, given what’s been happening lately. The fact that it was written before the pandemic started is uncanny. And also convinced me that Jonny is an avatar of some dark power and really triggered the apocalypse at the end of season 4. I knew that chant was too good to be fake!

NotAVandyGirl

Helen was absolutely holding a wine glass the entire time

Gladiolus

Oooof. This was real good and also a bit close to home. I'm glad that it lightened up there at the end, thank you for that. Helen, as always, delightful.

Theora Rice

I LOVE HER

Of Winter

Ok 1 HELEN! 2 "I am not nor have I ever been adorable!" "Okay not true"

YamiKakyuu

this episode was AMAZING im losing my MIND!! also the writing in this one... jonny absolutely killed it on the statement it was probably one of my favourites so far. and the banter!!! amazing!!!!!!!

Elisar Haydar

The speed at which fan theories are being confirmed makes me nervous. Gorgeous writing, and as I'm sure this will all end in flames (perhaps literally), I'm going to enjoy the hell out of shipper Helen embarrassing Jon while I can.

Bresby

I need a shower....a scalding shower...and a case of Borax.

JA Baldwin

the visual depictions in this episode were amazing!! i just wish one person in the world would PLEASE tell the archivist that this is NOT his fault!! he's been so, so abused and kept in the dark :(

james evelyn

Woooow!!! No words for the village.....(Shudders!!). Such a great episode! Another well written hellscape. And Martin the pragmatist! Building allies!

LainyJP

absolutely stunning episode, i genuinely gasped at several points of the 'guidebook'. also obviously SO THRILLED to hear miss spiral herself, light of our lives

Murdo Homewood

did martin actually ask "who was phone"??? god bless you jonny

belated

HELEN MY LOVE

red

“Post-Apocalyptic Google”. I die.

Brian Taulbee

Gladiolus
