MAG 169 - Fire Escape

Comments

I feel sorry for Martin having to go along with this one. Jon chose revenge over Martin, and honestly it was rather petty.... even tho Martin *was* the one pushing him to kill all the avatars lol.

Rurrie

These are all incantations.

Mary M Spila

Relistening. My mum's house burned down when she was 12, and I've had a pan fire situation more than once. Things (like the fridge) catching fire has been something my stupid anxiety latches onto. This episode, especially with the Grenfell notes (I had nightmares for a while after that), definitely pushed some buttons. It's not the fire itself (I've spent a lot of time with large bonfires, and even being firemaster). I'm pretty sure it's the trappedness and destruction of the familiar and comforting (i.e. classic desolation) that gets me. I've been wondering which domain I would be in in this world and it's a toss-up between this one and the Buried.

GugTheGoose

You asked, I think? Here's the conjugation. Smite - smote - smitten. Here, it would be smitten.

GugTheGoose

This is moderately off topic but this is the first time anyone has ever said my last name right first go

Saint Judas

I love how the fans for MAG are--collectively--like, "Hey, wait, [that's] different!" Hats off for making many, *many* people paranoid because of the quality of an effect. <3

Froggy

chilling episode, fantastic sound effects.

ledgem

amazing episode

Emma.he.they

Man, the soundscaping in this one is off the charts!!! Mega kudos! Also, capitalism can indeed bite me.

Livy King

Alex's voice acting was especially wrenching and good this episode, mad props mate

Aydenburd

wow, this was brilliant 😍😍 I'd say more but I'd just end up rambling about every little detail.

Deleady .

Another brilliant episode. This one was extra creepy being in rentals rather than home owners, but so good. Glad this is now instead of 10 years ago when I had the super shitty landlord. Plus, we learned a few things- the Archivist can be pulled out of his statements., Martin is terrified of fire.

Heather MacKenzie

Johnny sims really said fuck landlords huh. Love the episode, gotta love anything that involves my gal Jude Perry

Bee

I'm SUPER here for this horror podcast set after an apocalyse having this uncompromising anti-landlord content in,. I'd forgotten Arthur Nolan was a landlord so at a meta level I spent a while being like "hmm it's interesting for this to be the Grenfell Memorial #ALAB Afterlife, isn't Desolation kind of ... impulsive spiteful sadism more than uncaring extractive capitalism?". I feel like landlordly criminally negligent penny-pinching is very often more indifference than sadism, in the sense that profit-through-exploitation is the point and suffering is incidental? The whole "the eternal torment hellscape is gonna keep all the horrible things capitalism invented" angle on this series is great tho.

Nikki Bee

Had a hard time getting through this one because it hit home. Fantastic work. If I walk away with singed feelings, it was well done. <3

Kat

really? not only did i not notice during my first listen, but i had to replay the timestamps a few times and then then i can only hear anything at all at 9:39

Lina Day

this was a really great episode! but to follow up on the above comment about sound effects, the jangly piano chord-esque noise (at 9:17, 9:39,11:04 for example) was super distracting to me while i was listening and i can't for the life of me figure out what it was supposed to represent in the context of a burning apartment building. i don't think i'll be able to listen to the statement part of the episode again, but not because it was extremely menacing (it was) but because i kept listening for that sound effect instead of jonny's voice.

Catherine Cerny

😳 m-mr alex j newall sir.... there is a sound effect in your episode that is Bad (the discordant piano stings during the statement) sir can you take it out please thank you sir my $5/month is yours sir... 😳

Justin Armijo

Boy was I ever scared when I kept hearing Martin coughing violently and remembering the character death warning on this episode, made me so edgy. This episode was intensely real and frightening in particular and made me feel on the edge of crying the whole time. I very much appreciate this interweaving of very real world issues into each episode, this one struck home deep for me.

Zorya Dolgushkin

really loved this ep, so brutal on so many levels and really incredible acting. and im always here for jon getting called out by other avatars. I feel this episode has laid the groundwork for a lot of upcoming... conversations and events. I'm really excited to see what happens!!

Juliana Scherzer

In the latest Q&A, Johnny mentioned that he’s noticed his anger at current events informing the stories this season, and Jesus was he right! The Worms started it, but THIS was a burning indictment of the world today!

Brian Taulbee

Jesus. That was amazing, but it may be the only episode I'll never listen to again.

E C Marlowe

Marvellous work as always RQ , however you really knew we needed the fluff episode after this huh πŸ™ƒ owchyouch

Cece Henry

Amazing job with this one, guys. Another banger!

Candelantern

Ouch. That was a toughy, but in a good way!

fromgloriousjupiter

First ep I found genuinely hard to get through, hit close to home and reminded me of Grenfell. Landlords who value money over human lives really do belong in the realm of fear gods huh

Sophie Bury

not to be a web martin conspiracy theorist but we do know that the web is weak to the desolation.....

Katie Blackley

I absolutely love this episode it made me feel terrible in a good way. Thank you

Aym B

This was so good. But terrifying! Yet so good. Also terrifying

Julova

Do you smell smoke? is the most cursed statement

EmZeez

Martins coughs in the background while Jude is just monolgueing on and he's charging his smite is so unsettling and everything buuuuuurns The depth of sound kills. This episode is just - so awful and great.

EmZeez

okay so we now know that Martin Blackwood is able to STOP the archivist when he's mid monologue....... that. sure has Implications

Jojoiter

shhh lower your voice

danny

the 'uncaring landlords as genuinely horrifying malevolent forces' plots are so real and well handled

Hari draws

I think Jonny just showed us a little glimpse at Martin's fate

Maddie

I actually physically shuddered at the sounds of jude being... smote? ooof. this ep was harrowing all around. very nicely done! (also someone PLEASE hug martin. that boy is Going Through It)

Finn Patrick

catch me organizing a rent strike after this episode

cereal

nice

Deneb

The SOUND DESIGN!!! The ACTING!!!! Everything this episode was Chef’s Kiss πŸ˜πŸ’–

Isabelle

I hated this, by which I mean it made me physically uncomfortable and panic-y. In other words, it was very very very good. It feels very reminiscent of Grenfell (as I'm sure was intended), and that makes it feel even more harrowing. The skill of the writers to reflect real life tragedies in a way that never feels cheap or exploitative is a real talent. Thank you for this episode <3

gojo fujoshi

This feels like a step on the path toward a Jon going too far and getting Martin hurt. Already scared about that coming!

Rebecca Dupont

Slap count: 2, good job Martin!

sasmus

This was so good, forgot how much fire scared the shit out of me!

Meg Shergold

she's rght and she should say t

Of Winter

lmao is alex's throat okay after that

mistmistly

Okay but that statement was a legit fear of mine after I first learned about fire safety as a kid. I still hate sleeping with my door completely closed because of it.

romi Χ¨Χ•ΦΉΧžΦ΄Χ™

Brilliant episode. The sound scaping was absolutely amazing and god do I love Jude.

Spicy Hot Take

To be honest, I liked how anti-climatic the end was. Full Kill Bill doesn’t sound like it’s as satisfying as Mahtin thought. Interesting.

Gilligan Mungus

That was amazing. Best episode so far and right now my fave of s5. Wow...just wow!!! Worth the wait!!

YamiKakyuu

amazing soundscaping! the whole thing left me feeling unsettled in a good way!

Rhia

The Magnus Archives feat. Martin Blackwood coughing out a lung

Sindri MjΓΆlnir

Absolutely fucking incredible ep, worth the extra wait

Arcturus

Another episode of Give Martin A Hug! I loved the sound effect used near the end, reminds me of 80s anime.

Clay (keeningthoughts)

*woah*

Hannah J

Ouch. Worth the wait. Ouch.

james evelyn

holy shit

Emma.he.they

too soon?

ray brantley

holy, uh, smokes.

ray brantley

This was one of the very few episodes that had me shaking. I sympathize with Martin a lot on the burning.

James White

it's her it's her it's her sure hope she doesn't get smote

Of Winter

YAY! It's here! thanks for taking the extra time to make it great!
