MAG 171 - The Gardener

Comments

ok this one didn't scare me until I really listened, intently. as someone who struggles with chronic exhaustion and undiagnosed whatever, the Lily of the Damned hit a little too close to home.

Pia K R

My love of gardening made the aesthetic of this episode very appealing. "The worst place that has ever been beautiful." Accurate.

Rurrie

This is probably one of the best Magnus Archive episodes so far, which is saying a lot. "More in the pruning than the preparation" is such a chiling line, it will stick in my mind for years to come.

Gabe Neil

The desription of the mortal garden and its flowers have really made this a stand out horrorscape. Bravo on another incredibly good episode, and one that has made me reflect on some of the negative thoughts that have passed through my mind with respect to body image. Very sobering.

marie CD

Revisiting this one and damn, the soundscape is fantastic right from the beginning

bonecrusher

That was a ridiculously effective and moving episode! I would never have pictured The Flesh developing like this. Felt like an audio Hieronymus Bosch painting! Bravo!!!

Kyle Kane

Well that tune will never bring up pleasant childhood memories again. Thanks.

Jo

Smashed it once again guys, this was intensely upsetting (especially because it certainly sounded like Jonny and Alex provided some of the extra anguished voice work for background ambience-that scream roughly 2 mins in followed by crying broke my HEART.) This was amazingly well done, made extra horrifying with all the calm bird song in the background like normal English garden...

MuddyHippy

When we're all told we're beautiful flowers, this is NOT what I thought of. Damn.

Heather MacKenzie

well I wasnt expecting THAT. Jon keeps coming for us each week

Deleady .

LOVED this episode!

Flowers

that ending tho. Martin's flame of home burns eternal. ...I hope.

ledgem

“Hordak may be evil but he won’t misgender you” I’m SCREAMING!! What an apt parallel I would literally never have thought of

Lizzie

Listening to this while eating lunch is a fascinating experience in disassociation.

Chekhov

...also, "yes this is my boyfriend" jonny stares directly into camera like he's on the office, while known bully Jared is like "okay, yeah, fair enough" has so much SPoP energy? Like, Hordak may be EVIL but he won't misgender you. Jared may be the literal avatar of a flesh nightmare who tortures people but if you call him on his homophobic bullcrap he's just "my bad".

Lasgalendil

Well, OUCH.

Lasgalendil

i always kinda figured the whole kill bill apocalypse revenge road trip was just that, revenge. it was established early on that killing the entities didn't save the people trapped in their domains. we haven't encountered anybody outside of the domains, so its not like freedom from the domains is likely? anyway, congrats on the revenge jon, you're doing great!

Paola Ivanna

that. was. SO. GOOD

Sasha

me, trans and in anorexia recovery, putting all the flesh-oriented episodes into my Favorite Magnus Eps Playlist for "no reason": i just think they're neat

martin kachow blackwood

so listen this is weird to say but as someone who's struggled with dysphoria and eating this episode felt like ...... so good to listen to? it's an incredible metaphor for describing those feelings. i feel like i have a new mental framework for my own experiences now. thank you for this. <3

Kat Veldt

Martin sounded so soft and gentle talking to John, especially compared to previous annoyance/frustration that’s come through in his tone before. Not in a meek way, just a caring way. ❤️

Nicky

Garden was such an amazing visual choice for the entity! Didn't expect it and yet could draw the picture of it in my mind vividly. Awesome stuff

Julova

Wrt the garden...I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholding

Adrian Clarke

also, no fear > one day seeing "character death" in the cws and only martin and the archivist credited in the performances > one fear

SpookyArchivist

rip to jared, he was one of my fave avatars but he really deserved it after this episode. great writing and soundscaping as always! hard to listen to, but in a good way.

SpookyArchivist

baby’s first correct entity prediction! also i love jared hopworth even if he sucks to listen to (in a good way!)

oliver

the fact that there's calming bird noises freak me out, because we've seen absolutely no animals in the apocalypse.

Haily

well just go ahead and rip my kneecaps out while you're at it mr sims jesus

hrrng

What....and I mean this with all the love and fondness I possess... the fuck

Megan Aguilar-Ames

The meat sounds that always accompany Jared make me slightly nauseous. Really good episode though, I loved it

Sydney Teague

A great episode, but man, does Jared need subtitles.

Issendai

holy shit this episode was INCREDIBLY GOOD and satisfying on basically every possible level.

Jon Cantwell

oh my heart, the end of this episode is exactly what I've been wondering. is smiting these avatars even making a difference?? why are they doing it if it's not? I'm so conflicted but also excited to see how this progresses T 0 T good job guys, fantastic stuff as always

PeriPeriwinkle

also i love that the fandom has collectively decided we cannot be frightened by jared. he is simply our sweet boy who wants to have more bones

gojo fujoshi

God, this is incredible. This is so MEAN! I love it!! I suffered with anorexia for five years and was very unwell, and this is by far the best depiction of it I've ever seen. Some of the lines were gut-punching. In particular, the line of 'to be wanted, you must be less' was just... I think I made audible noises at that one because OUCH. Honestly, that one is so close to home that I kind of really really love it, because so often eating disorders are portrayed badly, and this is the first time I've really felt someone captured the feelings involved in one. You can really feel the research this required. The last story was also incredible (I mean, they all were, but those two stick out to me)- the feeling of being trapped in a body that betrays you is a fear that deserves far far more coverage, and you gave it what it deserved here. I also weirdly relaly loved hearing transhumanism included in possible escapes, as that struck a lot closer to home to me than religion. Thank you for this awful, terrible, beautiful thing.

gojo fujoshi

Also, as a mlm. Boyfriend is a good sound to hear. Feels good feels organic!

CJ - Possumpaints

This was strangely pretty, I really love it

CJ - Possumpaints

166: “Does he even NEED you?” 171: “Don’t do that.” “What?” “Use me as an excuse!”

Maddie

damn, what a visceral experience this was. possibly the most horrifying for me yet because of how deeply connected the flesh is to body image. and of course it would be; how could it not?

ray brantley

Well... this one hurts

Uni

How does he manage to make each horrifying hellscape perfectly pull out those little niggling thoughts that lurk at the backs of our minds?! Shows us that each domain isn't so far away? Previously I was like, 'hurr hurr, meat, weird flesh masses, such fun' and now I'm thinking about all those times I've succumbed to self-loathing or wished unhealthy ideals upon my body...

GugTheGoose

Really love viscera! Great episode!

Lee!

🦷🦷🦷

Brennan Michael

I love the experimentation with writing styles this season! One of my favorites so far!

thenonsensearchives

Holy wow. The cultivation notes, the soundscaping - it's just so good. Brilliant job as always, y'all.

romi רוֹמִי

cheers to both me and now my brother's names having been people suffering horribly in various domains (this would've been a great patreon tier I feel like)

Aydenburd

god i am shaking from head to toe i think it's illegal to be this much of a good writer

Chiara Iannelli

Relistening to the “boyfriends” bit to feel good 😔🤘 this was an excellent ep, everything about the flesh is deeply scary

Isabelle

1) I love Jared he's been one of my favorites since season one and 2) having struggled with anorexia, this episode both scares me and reassures me; it reminds me of what comes from giving into anxieties, that I won't like the results regardless, so there's no point in beginning again - self-love has better returns and is long lasting. Thanks for another great one, RQ.

Sam Miller

Absolutely obsessed with the tightrope walk between humanization and de-humanization in this statement. Also?? All the names are amazing? The language is so appropriately horrifyingly beautiful and I am GEEKING OUT over it.

james evelyn

I wonder what Jonny and them think when they read comments like this.

Julian

That was brilliant! Chilled me right to my core

GriffinsTreehouse

ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS ONE

Griffin Irradiatedsnakes

Ok I finished it and it's so aggressively up my alley! This is one of my favorite episodes this season I think!

Crew of the SS Nordstrom

This episode really hit hard whew. Great work overall!

ScarletWitch

Real glad I listened to this after eating breakfast, what a great episode!

The Magnus Archives Was A Comedy

As someone named Patricia this really hit home. But god was it amazing to listen to.

TigersPat

God I was waiting for The Flesh! My favorite fear in the show. I love that this wasn’t just some slaughter house, but some disgusting garden of people. I also love that The Flesh finally has its psychological aspects explored more.

James White

Flesh always gets to me. Amazing episode!!!

Clara Joe Bailey

That was sublime!

JA Baldwin

I love a conflicted protagonist and a sympathetic villain. This episode has both.

LainyJP

This was such a great episode, absolutely horrifying, but still so great!! The soundscape was so well done too!

Meg Shergold

ooh bone boy returns!

Ryan Campbellbarrows

Going by the description I think I’m going to regret getting a snack for this...

GriffinsTreehouse
