MAG 173 - Night Night

Comments

I enjoyed the Peter And Jane bookending in the narration

GugTheGoose

Having heard my own kids scream in utter terror, yeah. This episode could have hit all my stress buttons. The soundscaping is enough to be unsettling, without distracting from the statement and plot build up. I listened to this one twice the day it dropped, just to appreciate both the horror and the acting.

PeachyIndeed

I'd just like to say how much I appreciate the... delicacy? with which the eternal psychological torture of children was dealt with. This almost seemed gentle in comparison (I dont know what that says about me)

Professional Cat Lady

do you think we could get a domestic violence content warning for the "thanks for not hitting me this time" line?

Rowan Hannigan

I think he’s just losing what little optimism he’d mustered as they slog through the domains. He isn’t reveling in the terror and horribleness he’s being overwhelmed with, he’s feeling powerless against it. If he or someone else come up with something that might do some good, I don’t currently doubt he’ll try it and give his best effort.

Nicky

Is it just me, or is Jon becoming more an more of a monster? I'm not sure he's even going to want to fix the world by the time he and Martin get to the Archive.

James Rule

Possibly says something about me that what I am most concerned about is the relationship of Jon and Martin starting to crack with all the strain

Rebecca Dupont

Martin: “Think of the children!” Jon: “I am and I hate it!!!”

luvkirby4ever

I'm starting to worry about Martin and Jons' relationship a great deal. I definitely want to see them through to the end together, but they're under so much pressure, Jon still hasn't learnt to communicate his feelings well, and I'm sincerely convinced that Jon is right and this can't be fixed - so what is Martin going to do when he discovers that? He's been holding out for so long. Anyways the sound mixing in this one was some of the best yet, amazing work. Also love the shift to the childish voice for the "statement". The scariest thing for a lot of people is going to be the idea of children getting hurt.

Sam Miller

Oh, this one was good and creepy. Am I the only one who hears Martin getting more and more frustrated? the Archivist's line: "Just tell me what you want me to do and I'll do it." He's trying, he really is but I'm worried that Martin still doesn't really understand. Jon and Alex's acting this season is just surpassing excellence.

Heather MacKenzie

please don't stop hoping for a better future, Martin, you're.... our only hope??

ledgem

I am just blown away by the quality of each new episode. This is brilliant!

Lurkin

I really hadn't thought about what happened to all the children, so thanks for this Jonny. 👌 My heart is breaking for Jon and Martin. I hate seeing them fight because Martin is still holding onto hope that they can fix this and Jon really doesn't think they can - understandably so.

TJ Hoffer

Jonny terrorizes small children ASMR I guess...

Lasgalendil

ya know I HAD been wondering where they went. I regret wondering. Wonderful ep.

Oltanya

Each new episode is so bittersweet. They’re all incredible, but every Wednesday I hope for, and still haven’t gotten, The Vast’s episode.

Brian Taulbee

“13 year olds are the meanest people in the WORLD”

Maddie

I suspect the Jonah!Elias confrontation in the Archives will be much less of “a thing” than Martin expect it to be. I’m anticipating it as the mid-season point.

Nicky

*tries not to think about the kids in my life tries not to think about the kids in my life tries not to think about the kids in my life tries not to thi-*

Megan Aguilar-Ames

I feel like the heart of this season is the tension between Jon being convinced there's nothing that can undo what's happened and Martin's hope and need to try anything he can - I feel like Martin's written off Jon's despair as him feeling guilty and overwhelmed, when it's probably quite a lot from him being able to see the logic of the remade world in all its horrors. Jon knew already killing other avatars is useless except if it'd make them feel better; these few episodes have been a series of less and less actively malicious domain-holders until it gets to a literal child and Martin can't rationalise it as setting the scales right any more... but Jon and Martin are on edge with one another about this and can't manage a conversation about "ok, is there any possible good can we do by marching onwards", they're just gonna have to try it together. I'd not be surprised this will be the moment when Martin turns to Annabelle Cain: when he finally gets it through his head that Jon's certain there's no way to use the Eye's power to undo the Eye's own apocalypse...

Nikki Bee

So the Hunt may be them re-encountering Trevor Herbet and Julia Montauk for some more smiting, since the only other Hunt related person I can think of is Daisy/Basira and i don't think we're going to get a resolution for that particular storyline quite yet. Spiral could be Helen's domain, as both Jon and Martin "like" Helen but it would obviously be very emotionally taxing to go through her personal area, which is why i think Jon is going to avoid it in favor of something else. I get the sense we may encounter either Father Edwin Burrows (all the way back from 19/20, as he's still alive or some other random Spiral Area. Vast will possibly be Simon Fairchild, as again Jon has expressed dislike of him and would probably smite if possible, and we haven't really encountered any other Vast people besides Michael Crew, and Daisy killed him. I feel like the Eye might be Melanie/Georgie, since even though Melanie freed herself from the institute she was still a (unwilling) servant of the Eye for a long time, so it might have at least stowed them away somewhere where it can torment them in private. Like they're part of a "gated" living area that is safe but every single person feels like they are always being watched all the time or something? idk? I just doubt we will get to the Archives until episode 180 or later, they need to build up to the confrontation more.

Moonwatcher13

Dammit Jonny. I’d relegated Callum Brodie to past victim, non-entity status. But of course his experience would have marked him. I was even wondering if Manuela was going to make an appearance in this episode but that would have been too obvious and easy. I see that now. Five effing years in, so much time spent listening to this podcast, dissecting it and marveling at what you have wrought. And still I’m caught unaware. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible talent and for writing the unpredictable. This episode was brilliant. 👏

Gilligan Mungus

This was absolutely how my mind worked as a kid. Seeing shapes in the trees, or deciding one part of the house was Bad In The Dark for no discernible reason, but just *knowing* there had to be something lurking there. Fantastic episode.

Kae Winters

This one was really damn tough to listen to.

Eli Lass

Distortion too I think!

Ghost

So it's only the hunt, the vast and the eye left?

Crew of the SS Nordstrom

Oh, love this one, think it might be my favourite for that Entity (fittingly!). Hit very true.

sAZAndorable

Oh look, my childhood fear in 18 minutes or less. Ouch (this was amazing, but gosh did it sting).

elizabeth p.

Hey, Jonny? Jonathan? I was FINE not thinking about what happened to the kids in the Apocalypse.

Clara Joe Bailey

Right!?!?! I did not like that at all 😞

LainyJP

This one was so sad, the kids, Callum, Martin's frustration and John's guilt. Not at all what I expected from The Dark, very well done.

LainyJP

I really hadn't wanted to think about what happened to the children. But the hardest thing about this episode was, "Thank you for not hitting me this time." I literally gasped, and now I want to cry. Jon and Martin's love for each other may be the only good thing left in the world, and it's being destroyed little by little.

E C Marlowe

the magnus archives is a podcast..........

emma

CHRIST. That hurt.

GriffinsTreehouse

That was really good, felt like the emotional equivalent of :(

Isabelle

Wow...I was not expecting that! <3

JA Baldwin

just listened. this is not a joke, on monday when the ep name was released i joked to my discord "i never found the Dark that scary, it'll be fun to see if this one can fuck me up." AND MAN. I APOLOGIZE. JONNY GOT ME. I TAKE IT BACK.
