MAG 175 - Epoch

Comments

"Besides, we can help them now!" "....yeah." 😬

Just some info on the title: The Earth's history is split into sections and sub-sections defined by important changes in the geological record. The biggest chunks are called superaeons (several billion years), and the smallest divisions are called ages, usually covering less than a couple of million years. One type of subdivision is called an epoch, with each lasting a few million years. The one we are in now is the Holocene (started 11.5 thousand years ago), and before that the Pleistocene- the one with lots of 'ice ages' (think mammoths). The Anthropocene is an epoch under debate at the moment by the International Stratigraphic Commission, arguing that humanity’s actions will leave a permanent change in the geological record (e.g. radioactive fallout from nuclear weapons; transference of new-world and old-world flora / fauna across the Atlantic leading to a change in the fossil record).

GugTheGoose

I had to pause for a moment to wonder whether you were referring to Leah or to the furniture...

GugTheGoose

Character death?? This is gonna hurt me ahh

Bee

who amongst us is not a laughable umbrella.

I'm adoring this season despite my growing dread... started a complete re-listen from ep.1 yesterday and it's blowing my mind how much work went into both Jon and Martin's characterization from the get-go, how much they both got drawn out of their shells, and how much their relationship has DEVELOPED to get to the point where they can speak to each other with such open affection. Just the tone of Jon's voice in this episode as they're ribbing each other is making my heart want to burst. As much as they joke, I find that each episode this season has also given us an incredibly detailed guide to boundary-setting and building/maintaining a healthy relationship, even in dire circumstances. Truly BRILLIANT.

Anthony

the bit about there not being an "infinite" fits with the last episode, where the giant monster is still just made up of many human beings - real the true is the made hours haha I love this series so much; I had no idea what to expect in S5 and it's surpassed/confounded all expectations I had - another really great piece of writing this week.

Alex

I think we may all be fearing the content warnings next week. The 16th fear. πŸ™‚

Gilligan Mungus

Wow...just. There were 15 all along. I think I had an existential crisis listening to this episode. Brilliant job. While Martin is excited to see Bashira and Daisy, why does it sound like The Archivist knows what's about to happen and just doesn't want to disappoint Martin???

Heather MacKenzie

the statment had me staring off into space with no conection to reality good job

Emma.he.they

I feel guilty that before this I never quite understood why hearing a statement about your namesake would unsettle people, because now I'm like: damn, Jonny, you didn't have to @ me like this :/ cheers for the extra dose of weekly existential dread, though.

Sentient Desk Chair

I am I am!

LainyJP

hey wow i am Feeling Some Things. that was a lot!!!!! i hate it and i love it and i am IMMEDIATELY hitting replay

red

this episode really threw me for a loop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love it so much

Levi Curtis

Poor umbrella. I haven't felt this bad for an inanimate object since the Ikea Lamp.

Opaline illyria

I have felt so much angst listening to this season, and I have adored the seconds of fluff and comic relief, and THIS episode tipped me over into a pure horror that leaves no room for much else. I'm sure you read this sort of comment all the time but I came into this fandom late and I probably binged the series in two weeks at most (before listening again). I am not the type to be moved like that by anything, I'm in my late thirties and there have been maybe two other instances in my life where I fell in love anywhere near so deeply with a creation. Thank you from the bottom of my shriveled little post-Apocalyptic heart!

siliconealien

This was by far the hardest episode to listen to so far- I suppose because it felt so... real. The description of the gull creature actually hurt to listen to. The soundscaping just keeps getting better and better. This podcast has always been incredible, but this most recent season has genuinely been a work of art. I really think this will go down in history as the type of art that changes a field, and I'm so excited to see the type of thing your incredible work will inspire. Thank you, as ever, for sharing <3

gojo fujoshi

that ending--what a TEASE.

i usually try to leave thoughtful comments and responses to the episodes you guys put out, because i think the effort you put into this show deserves that much. that said i DID respond to the episode with a very long very pained laugh, so we'll see how well this goes! 1) i'm enamored of leah, i know we probably won't see her again, but her decision to cope with the end of the world by just recording everything she can still see really resonated with me, and in the short time we had to get to know her you gave her an enormous amount of character. 2) i'm beginning to grow more and more convinced that jon is... more than a little bit in denial about how much he's really enjoying being in this world. i hate to take such a harsh view of jon, because he's one of my favorite characters, but where he falls in terms of responsibility is so grey. he is, undoubtedly, a victim of jonah, but at the same time, my take has always been that the fear that is your patron is the one that preys on your worst impulses - not necessarily the thing you're afraid of yourself, but what feeds your top flaw. for jon, it was continuing to dig even when he should have been leaving. jon loves to look, he loves knowledge, he's just also a normal person who doesn't always react well to what he uncovers. but this world is feeding him. his answer to martin last week regarding whether or not he'd kill elias was so painfully wishy-washy, i'm just hoping martin comes in with a lead pipe. i don't know if jon's going to survive this and that scares me. 3) i don't think we can save daisy, unless she remembers how much she cares for basira. and i think daisy made a very serious choice in asking basira to kill her: she didn't want to go back to abusing the power she had, she knew that it was wrong. i think basira respects that, and because the only way daisy can really live as an avatar of the hunt is to keep hunting, killing her may be the only way to prevent her from doing something she herself considered reprehensible. i'm so on edge rq i'm quaking.

Sam Miller

Very unexpected and sooo nice!

sAZAndorable

Sooo next week's gonna be the happy heartwarming reunion of the Archivist and his best hunter buddy we've been waiting for right? Right?! ;_; Jk I'm ready to get hurt again

SpookyArchivist

halfway through and leah is gonna live in my head rent free WHO IS SHE... MISS? BLOWS A KISS TO THE EXTINCTION DOMAIN FOR LEAH WHO'S JUST WRITING THINGS DOWN, AS YOU DO!

Sam Miller

13:50-13:58 is just gonna stay on repeat in my brain for the rest of eternity

wilw

Gosh I was wondering whether the Extinction would rear its ugly head in S5!

Lurkin

Juicy and couch are two words I'd never imagine together. XD

JA Baldwin

I just wanted them to sit together on the juicy couch

Aline Macambira

I hope Martin has an extra pair of trousers... I doubt whatever was on that couch could be easily wiped off 🀒

Finn Patrick

The way that Jonny can put so much dread into a simple "Yeah. Yeah." response is amazing! Martin, you aren't going to help shit next week, and Jon knows it.

Brian Taulbee

Funny, the things you'll find comforting while drawing parallels with apocalypse-media to real life. I'm still reeling from SEVERAL raw lines in this episode. Yes, Martin, is the Archivist infuriating with his vague answers? Mayhaps! Is it not still interesting as HECK? Mayhaps!!!!

james evelyn

daisys gonna go to a nice farm in the country and Nothing else bad will happen

ttroutlaw

I think there is no way to save Daisy, at least not in the way Martin imagines. Plus Basiara may want to fucking kill them both. Regardless, this is a tragedy kids, i can't see next week going well. also, Thank you Jonny Sims for taking the existential dread i feel about climate collapse and ecological destruction and putting it into words. yayyyyyyy

Moonwatcher13

How timely I was JUST having my existential crisis this week

Megan Aguilar-Ames

Oh I just assumed it will be Hunt, as Basira was chasing after Daisy, after she went back to the Blood from chasing Trevor and Julia...

HazelnuttGem

Makes you wonder what he Knows about that couch...

HazelnuttGem

Next week is the musical episode, right? 😁

Gilligan Mungus

This episode is great both in its own right and bc also it makes me think that while Jon's working on his tourist's guide to hell (a spooky monologue for every domain!), Martin's sitting around coming up with increasingly big questions for his boyfriend to google with his brain & its ill-gotten eye powers... Also: extremely less optimistic than Martin is about the chance of things going well with Daisy and Basira. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but I can't even figure out where they'd be together? Basira must be more Eye-adjacent than anything else, Daisy is no longer quite Hunt, but surely the Eye domain would be the tower and we can't be getting to there yet...

Nikki Bee

lol thanks I hate it

bonecrusher

Sit on the juicy couch, Jon.

sasmus

who else is scared as hell for next week lads

Megan S.

See now I am very curious about what Jon did not say about Basira and Daisy since he felt was going to have to warn Martin about it!

Rebecca Dupont

Well, that was unexpected.

Issendai

I love love the way this was handled.

James White

The part of this episode the elicited the biggest reaction from me was the architect not sitting down. Just sit next to your boyfriend Jon.

Tommy Parker

Nothing quite like seeing the warning "Unpleasant SFX" in the podcast famous for "Meat Sounds" to really inspire a cold dread. I should probably get lunch BEFORE I listen to this, cause I gotta feeling I'm not going to be eating after I hear this one.

Sydney Teague

Each episode continues to surprise me. And ending Act I with Daisy & Basira?? Brilliant. I know that it isn't going to be as happy as poor baby Martin is hoping. 😬

LainyJP

I audibly screamed "YES!!!!" while alone in my room at that last minute. I am ready to get hurt again

Maddie

I was curious about whether the Extinction had gained enough fear to warrant its own domain here, so this was quite interesting. I'm glad I didn't listen to this with headphones, though, because some of those sounds were gross enough without them.

romi Χ¨Χ•ΦΉΧžΦ΄Χ™

I wasn't expecting this at all but I really really liked this episode. Both the statement part and their conversation afterwards. And the soundscaping, as always. The hopelessness in Jon's voice at the end breaks my heart.

Rosa

Whoever managed to get the image of plastic soda can rings around sea creatures into the minds of our collective unconscious should win some kind of award. It remains one of the most visceral and upsetting images of the Anthropocene, and was exquisitely deployed here by Jonny. Amazing episode!!!
