Just listened to this episode, as well as (re)listening to older ones, as I did some boring repetitive physical work this afternoon, and gosh, thank you so much for this show. Obviously I started listening because I was already a fan of RQ shows and people, but it's genuinely a great show immensely enjoyable in its own right -- there is no difference in how much I enjoy episodes featuring familiar people I've been Stanning for years or guests and more invisible production crew members I don't know much or at all. And the same is true of the topics. Always fun, always thoughtful, often surprisingly informative despite the "no facts in this show!" premise. I know near to nothing about opera, but had no problem at all following this episode and ended it all hyped and excited and interested and curious. Everyone's stories were so nice and touching, all the points appreciated and interesting... Just, wah, what a fantastic concept for a show and what a great execution. Particular kudos to Helen for being an excellent host, as I have that thought nearly once an episode!

On the subject of tenors, this might be Relevant To People's Interests: legendary mezzo Stephanie Blythe found her voice deepened when she went through menopause and she can now SING THE TENOR REPERTOIRE — she describes herself as “a straight, cis woman with a genderfluid voice” — so she’s invented a drag king tenor persona, Blythely Oratonio, who’s now acquiring his own career. Google, there's video, it's awesome.

omg. Thank you for "actively disliking" PotO. I abhor all thing ALW with an unabiding passion! Katie, save yourself and never ever see that steaming pile of gawdawful ear poison. I definitely remember being absolutely enamored with The Daughter of the Regiment by Donizetti as a child and playing that over and over so that definitely would qualify as an additional 'gateway drug' to opera.

This was a fun episode! And it was cool to hear everyone's relationship to opera 💖 Wonder if a future episode about film scores specifically would be a fun thing to do? 👀 Or maybe even classical music!

As someone whose done a lot of musical theatre but never seen or done opera,,, the comment about tenors is very applicable to musical theatre and EXTREMELY accurate

Really enjoyed this episode! I enjoy opera but I haven’t seen many. It was fun to hear everyone’s introduction to opera and various perspectives.

Dr. Atomic is really good! I heard it on the radio years ago. It has the dubious claim to fame of having the word 'kidneys' in it.

I'm very excited about this! I love opera 🤗 Helen! I'd suggest "Mephistophles", if you are looking at Faust adaptations. The San Francisco Opera had a fantastic version from 2014 that is fantastic!
