Neon Inkwell: Of That Colossal Wreck - Behind the Scenes

Comments

"it's like having a way of triangulating where the narration's focus - its *thoughts* - are relative to the character(s), whether the focus has gone inward vs. outward or balanced between, using the music vs./and sound effects to pull the listener there. which is a really cool kind of trick to be able to pull when sometimes there aren't even any verbal narration telling you where that focus is. I've always been intrigued by how the weighing of the distribution of sound between L and R outputs can imply whether sound is coming from straight on versus sided (chiral, even) in some way, but I hadn't quite put my finger on the idea that music/emotional tone cues vs. external noises could do a similar trick by implication."

...might as well out myself as the nerding about triangulation person, because that was a really cool conversation and I still think about it periodically. My full comment Katie was referencing is copied below, for anyone who's curious.

"Warmth" is right! This was lovely to hear.

Oh this was absolutely delightful! It was so wonderful hearing about what all went into the project!! I was especially delighted to hear more about the sound design from Katie because it was just so incredibly good. But it was such a complete little story I'm so impressed with every aspect of it! It just makes me want to relisten again all in one go to pick up on all the little things said!

Oh my god I LOVE the fact that the whistlers are discussed here! I'm pretty much the same as Luna and my initial reaction would be "can I pet that dawg??" (or try talking to it at the very least). Also the Levi and Mira parenting thing is absolutely brilliant, it really is like that and I felt it! Their leadership styles are so different but they really compliment each other, they are a great team! Thanks so much for this bts!

I missed Enthusigasm so much, this was really reminiscent of that and I adored it 🥺 So good hearing that everyone had an amazing time working together on this — talk about synergy!!! I really enjoyed Max’s work with Definitely Human and it was cool to hear his perspective on production here. Also, Katie’s sound design is somehow even COOLER than I knew, aaaah…!!! Incorporating human vocals into otherwise eerie monster noises is such an intriguing idea… All around great chat answered all my burning questions and more. I’m now stoked to think there might be one of these after every Neon series? I hope so! Great vibes as always!

I always love hearing Helen's voice, but beyond that this is just a lovely breakdown of the production. RQ keeps raising the bar!

Aw, strong temptation to just annotate this with many hearts, but have some words as well: Really enjoyed this! Could easily listen to an entire episode teasing out nuances of what Katie did with the soundscaping, SFX, and music on this show - I remain deeply impressed by it and the show as a whole. Delighted to have Helen showing up as host - I've missed the Enthusigasm chats! Always a pleasure to hear from Jonny and Sasha - seriously do rec checking out all their awesome MacGuffin & Co. stuff, including the ongoing TTRPG GamesMasterclass. Hope we get to see more of Maxamillian John in some of the upcoming shows.
