Lee Kuan Yew thinks Singapore is not yet a nation. They are still in transition, hoping to become a nation, maybe in another 100 years (Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going, 2011). He thinks the Soviet Union is an empire not a nation, and the US is a white man’s country, also not fully a nation. I don’t know if the answer is knowable, certainly Lee himself don’t know the answer, otherwise he wouldn’t have written the book. They do know what could led to failure: if they cannot maintain a clean, capable government; if they are unable to attract foreign talent and investments; if they are unable to maintain social stability and be a racially tolerant society. Everything rests on the assumption that Singapore will adapt to the vicissitudes of times because their people and their future generations know their place in the world.
