The Summer I Turned Pretty 2X5: Love Fool
Added 2023-07-28 17:36:07 +0000 UTCThis was sort of both a fun and sad episode all rolled into one.
Also, fun fact, while I was looking at the ceiling trying not to cry, I discovered there was a ladybug up there!

Agreed. I was pretty down on Conrad in the books and sort of assumed I'd be the same about him in the show. But he's easily the character I most root for and want things to turn out well for. (Although, I do really have a soft spot for Cameron). Whatever he ends up getting, he's totally earned. Yup, even when we saw Jere 'taking care' of Susannah, he was really just moping about the fact that Conrad got to take Belly to the prom, and he didn't. Seriously. I kept thinking, why is no one calling Laurel?! I totally forgot that their trip to the beach house was totally unsanctioned. And now that you've reminded me, I think 'getting in trouble' is a really shitty reason not to ask the person with the most chance of actually getting something done here for help. Laurel would buy that house in a heartbeat. She loved Susannah more than anything else in the world. Including her marriage.

2023-07-29 16:39:09 +0000 UTCI've turned way more into a Conrad fan this season than I thought I would. I thought I'd dislike him more based on the book, but it's hard to not be more invested in him than anyone else cause he's the only one dealing with actual life, for lack of a better word. Belly is focused on the triangle. Jere, despite having a similar situation to Conrad, narrated an entire episode about Belly, Belly and Conrad, and Conrad. It's like the house being sold wasn't even on his radar. Even the flashbacks don't have him dealing with Susannah dying. I know he cares but it's hard to be invested in him when he, like Belly, seems so focused on the triangle and this one-sided competition with Conrad. I do agree though that I'm most invested in the relationship between him and Conrad right now. As you said, it's so much on Conrad's shoulders and he's lost his support system too. He's got Steven and that's it. Susannah is gone, Adam always seems to be part of the problem, Jere is holding a grudge, Belly is prioritizing Jere, and for some reason, no one has called Laural. I need them to get on that cause it's getting ridiculous that we're still hiding this from her just cause what? Belly and Steven snuck out to Cousins? Rip the bandaid off and take the punishment.

2023-07-29 15:17:11 +0000 UTCYeah, she's definitely a bit much right now. I have to keep reminding myself that she's, like, 17. I really don't have any idea what to expect with the house. I really thought the lawyer was going to figure out how to access the trust fund for the boys quickly, and that would be that. But it seems it's not going to be that simple. I totally agree with you about Conrad. Previously, he was the only one who knew specific information and chose to keep it to himself so as not to burden others with it. Currently, other people are asking him to burden himself. And, because he's who he is, he's doing it probably without even thinking about it. I'm kind of worried for him, honestly. This is way too much to put on his shoulders. Sure, he's an 'adult,' but he's only, like, 19, and his dad treats him like trash; his mom just died, he's been estranged from his brother, and his aunt is trying to sell his house. It's a lot for anyone to deal with. Right? Belly is not helping anyone. At all. She's making everything worse. I believe in her heart she means well, but unfortunately, that's not enough. She needs to take a step back, look around, and realize that the best thing she could probably do at this point is to call her mom and give everyone some space. At this point, the relationship I'm most invested in is the brothers being on the same page and working together. As opposed to Conrad doing all the work and Jeremiah blindly following or agreeing or putting in minimal effort.

2023-07-29 14:12:29 +0000 UTCBelly is the worst right now. I love her but was she seriously considering kissing Jere in front of Conrad? Like in what world did she think that was remotely okay? For any of them, not just Conrad. She's doing more and more damage every episode. I'm actually really curious about how the house plot turns out cause it's so different from the way the book played out, at least as far as the selling of it. It's so much more extreme in the show I feel like. A lot more obstacles. It's making me nervous. Totally agree with your end thoughts on Conrad, Jere, and Belly and the whole triangle. Something I actually noticed while watching with you is that in the past it felt like Conrad takes on the weight of the world without anyone really pressuring him too (besides his dad). In this episode though, I saw a lot of Jere and Steven pressuring him and looking to him. Steven is asking him what're they going to do to save the house. Jere, despite saying that Conrad's not doing it alone anymore, lets Conrad do all of the planning and solution-finding alone. It's Conrad that tries to call their dad, it's Conrad that's willing to sue their dad, it's Conrad reaching out to Liam, and it's Conrad emailing the lawyers. Conrad keeps Jere updated but he doesn't offer to help. All he's doing is offering part of his trust fund at this point. And then in ep 3 when Jere was crying outside and Conrad came out to talk to him, Jere basically just sat there and asked Conrad what the plan was and kind of pressured him to come up with one. I don't think Jere meant any harm, or Steven for that matter. I think they just turn to Conrad when they want/need reassurance and there's nothing wrong with that per say but it made me realize Conrad doesn't just take on everything cause his dad is a jerk who pushed that on him. The other people in his family (Conklins included) also look to him to have it all figured out. Belly tries to reassure him and be helpful but I feel like she does a lot of pacifying and promising that everything will be okay while not actually helping. Like in this episode when she stays behind to talk to him, she's got a lot of empty platitudes. In the flashback,, when Conrad tells her that they're changing his mom's meds and she's getting worse, Belly's like no that's not what it is. I'm sure she's getting better. I get why she's doing it but not really helpful. Conrad needs someone that will actually take some of the weight off his shoulders and share the burden with him and it should be Jeremiah. I hope that's what this season progresses towards as they move forward with trying to save the house. I also think that development would help reduce the competition that Jere feels with Conrad. Like if they're actually equals in something important to both of them, then that could go towards repairing their relationship. If only Belly could stay out of it.
