The Summer I Turned Pretty 2X7: Love Affair

OMG. The amount I cried in this episode. It made me incredibly emotional. I don't know how I feel about Belly 'picking' a brother. Even though I've been begging her all season to do so. That said, it was fun and I really enjoyed the friendship vibes. And thank you Laurel for fixing everything (maybe too easily) as we all knew you would.

I was wondering that too. I don't know how it would work otherwise. There is zero chance most of S3 isn't still her struggling with the fact that she wants to be with Conrad. Not only is he so important to her, but it's such an important plot point! It's a really good point you make about how important the summer house is to Belly. If/when she reveals to Jere that she lost her virginity to Conrad there, it's going to be a huge issue. But the reverse was true (minus the summer house) in the book, so who knows how it will play out. I agree. I love this adaptation. It was close enough that I wasn't annoyed about how 'none of this was in the book' (minus the weird debutant stuff) but had enough changed that there were surprises. I did not know some copies did not have the letters. They felt like such an important part! How could they be left out of some of them!?! Were they a last-minute addition? I need to know more about this! It's also interesting when things are adaptations. There were three finite books. What happens if this gets renews again? Will they try to stretch out book 3? Or just come up with new stuff in future seasons? I guess if Jenny Han continues to be involved, it'll be okay?

I wonder is the actual losing her virginity to Conrad during Christmas time, will be the replacement of her going to the house during Christmas when she is in college and then not telling Jere that for a day she was around Conrad secret. Not that she won't have sex with Jere, but I wonder if that will be a plot point, and we get his words about wanting her to give him all of her but she can't because part of her heart is still with Conrad. And with how she feels like certain things have to happen at the summer house... I just wonder will they have sex at all? Who knows. But I just feel that to stay somewhat even and true to the storyline, that Jere's bad qualities are going to get some light shine on them come season 3. I feel this has been a great adaptation of the books. And it seems that even if not all details are the same, most large plot points are still going the same. I agree with hating to have to wait a year or possibly longer with the strike going on, to get to what I am hoping is the end. Which edition of the books did you read? Did it have the copies of the letters from Conrad in them?

I've been burned before on this show, thinking things would go the way I expected them to. That said, I cannot see any other outcome other than Conrad heading off and leaving Belly and Jeremiah to date. Belly's sex life (being vaguish for spoilers) was such a big plot point in the books I don't know how that is going to play out in season 3. Yeah. I have no idea how they are going to play out season 3. Assuming it's remotely close to the book, I agree. All 3 of them have a world of hurt coming. But I don't wanna wait over a year to see it! Boo.

I wasn't even sure what was happening. I can't imagine he knew. Ugh. I forgot about the fact that she was wearing Conrad's sweatshirt when this all went down. I can agree that they are more mature than last season, but that's not really saying much. It seems like she's forcing herself to be over Conrad when she's clearly not. Even if I didn't know what happened in the books (which still might not happen), I assume I would still think something was up with her sudden decision to pick Jere. I know! I really thought they were all going to figure out their communication issues and actually talk to each other about how they were feeling and what was going on. I guess it was too much to ask. We did get a little, but not as much as we needed. I agree. It's much too late for either of them to consent to the other dating Belly. There is no situation where it will end up well for the 3 of them. (If they go with the book, I don't know how they will make it work. I'm pretty sure it just ended without the viewpoint of the other- staying vague for people who did not read). I'm also fairly curious to see how her sleeping with Conrad plays out because, if I remember correctly, that was a pretty significant plot point in the book. Yes! Laurel was awesome! I knew she would save the day. Which is why I am being so lenient on how it happened. I guess the kids trying to figure it out on their own for a couple of episodes counts as a struggle. Although, I think you're right. It was much more believable that Aunt Julia would be willing to discuss with Laurel as opposed to a bunch of teenagers. But I still think Adam gave in a little too easily. He was so adamantly against this. And then he was all, I guess we can just sell a house? I'm with you. I didn't agree with Julia's justification of how things played out. Even if things were as shitty for you as you claim, why would you want to continue that cycle with your nephews? She was totally taking out the problems she had with the rest of the family on them.

We all know how this is going to go. The motel scenes are next and then Conrad will be in California while they go to Finch together, belly being one year behind Jere… I need to see how season 3 plays out before I get to upset. But we all saw the darkest days for Conrad from the book, now to see Jere’s worst moments. You can’t keep it real if you don’t make the all good golden retriever, be the partying frat boy who gets jealous at some point of a Conradesque conversation with Belly and does something truly stupid. Belly still has some dark days coming…

I wonder if Conrad was completely blindsided because he seemed very unbothered and unthreatened by how touchy and playful Belly and Jere were being like it didn't even occur to him that he should be concerned. I thought it would make him suspicious but he didn't even side-eye it. The end kiss is so messy. It's Belly and Jere basically making out at Conrad's college, against Conrad's car, while Belly wears Conrad's sweatshirt. Yikes. Belly and Jere keep going on about how they've grown (and I think they have to an extent) but all I keep seeing is how immature they both still are. It feels like that's part of what makes them compatible right now though like they're on the same level and could help each other grow maybe. Speaking of immaturity, I think Conrad is going to get upset (understandably) and lash out. I can't say I'd be too mad if he does though. They've been tempting fate all weekend by sneaking around the house flirting whenever they weren't busy yelling at Conrad for disappointing them. When we got the beach scene with Conrad and Jere I got really hopeful that Jere would come clean about Belly and his feelings. Conrad was honest and vulnerable. He told Jere where he stood with Belly and about Stanford. Jere was all for them telling each other things even when it'd piss each other off but then Jere said nothing. It's his moment to ask for Conrad's blessing before anything definitive happens. I don't really think either one of them needs a "blessing" to date Belly cause it's so messy now that it's not like the blessing will ever be genuine or make it okay, but it was this big respect thing that Conrad had to do so that he could be with Belly. Jere needed to give his okay because Belly broke up with him after 3 days of unlabeled kissing. Belly and Conrad date for 7 months and are serious enough to have sex but neither says a word to him before they start making out in a place he was guaranteed to catch them since they were literally waiting for him to come back. That's the part I can't get over. So much selfish impulsivity in one scene. I loved Laural coming in this episode. I do think it was resolved too easily but it was so nice to have her here and for her to be fighting with them. I'm going to excuse the easiness of Julia and Adam conceding on them having the conversations with a "real" adult. I mean people like past the age of 25 when your brain fully develops and you stop seeing everything through teenage eyes, but also, an adult in Adam and Julia's eyes cause they see all of them as kids not worth listening to or conversing with. Now that we've heard Julia's whole side, I'm not really impressed with the reasoning. Like I have compassion for shitty families and places that hold bad memories but she crossed a line into being spiteful, at least that's what it feels like to me. It almost feels like she was punishing Conrad and Jere for being Susannah's kids after we find out that Susannah explicitly asked her to keep the house in the family and after she read Laural's memoir where Laural described how much the house meant to all of them.
