The US State Department has confirmed an American citizen was killed in artillery strikes around Chernihiv last night.
Jimmy Hill, 67, of Idaho, was a teacher in Ukraine for 25 years. He was romantically involved with a former student in her 40s, Irna. She developed multiple sclerosis and they had relocated to Chernihiv in January 2022, for medical treatment.
Hill's family is reporting he was among the 10 civilians killed in the breadline yesterday in Chernihiv. Ukrainian officials are reporting "several" American citizens have been killed.
US President Biden had expressed that the death of any US citizen was a red line. We don't know if this was a volunteer as part of the defenses, an international student still trapped in the city, a spouse or dual-citizen, or an employee of a company.
