Igor "Girkin" Strelkov reported two days ago that Ukraine had launched a counteroffensive on Novoselivka and had partially liberated the settlement.
This morning, the General Staff reported DNR forces attacked Novobakhmutivka, which means the settlement was liberated. This was a key advance as part of the plan to encircle Avdiivka. Russia was using the settlement to attack Krasnohorivka from two directions.
Krasnohorivka sits on a plateau, and its capture would have provided fire control over Avdiivka making its defense for a direct attack much more difficult. We were wondering if Russia had lost its positions here because there had been reports of attempted advances on Krasnohorivka for almost two weeks, and little mention of Novobakhmutivka. When Strelkov reported Novoselivka was contested, a salient had formed that, based on the map, didn't look very sustainable.
We've learned that the 93 Mechanized Infantry Brigade, the gods of war, the destroyers of Russian troops in Izyum, were transferred to Soledar/Bakhmut. They have had an immediate impact on the front.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine appears to have adapted to Russia's attritional warfare model. It is, sadly, a brutal adaptation, but it is working. I hope one day, when units like the 93rd are rightly venerated for their heroic action, the defense held by territorial guard units under impossible conditions is not forgotten.
