In regards to the ritual, Spike seemed only to be aware that a ritual existed. He needed the book he stole, and then the key (the decoder cross), in order to find out the details. Once he knew the details such as the church, the full moon, blood of the sire, and the liturgy to go with it, then it became quick and easy to do. This show is excellent in making sure that each character has their own life, and that they are not just living for Buffy, or are one of her appendages.
