What do yall think? Deciding between a simpler, less cluttered desert scene (would have missile trails, clouds etc in the sky) Or a more complex environment among rocks.

Thoughts?

I get the same feeling; I find the plane looks better facing right, but the composition is more harmonious facing left

Alex

I’d say B. It looked a bit better

Since working on the sky usually gets done less often i'd go with your suggestion of the less cluttered background in favour of a more elaborate section of the sky.

Simone Spinozzi

I tend toward B, as it has a sense of urgency that A doesn't have, even if there were contrails in the sky. Also, I felt that having the planes facing left felt more dynamic that facing right. Is that some sort of "art" rule?

Depends on the function this illustration needs to serve. If it's just highlighting the plane and the gear, then less background. But if this specific plane is somehow significant to the action in the background then include it. Like the way the Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka was significant to WWII, and you'd want the drama behind it.

Stephen Somers

Less clutter really spotlights the plane better.

I think the grey background of the hills helps the white stand out on the plane.

While I agree with Kalen to a degree, I really like the story that the complex background conveys. It adds depth to the piece that lets you take more time to unpack. Adding just one or two more instances of action amongst the foreground would be perfect.

My first impulse tends to the less cluttered- I feel like there would need to be some sort of foreground action (scrambling birrin pilots running across the tarmac, perhaps? ) to keep the focus there on the plane of there is stuff exploding in the background.
