Giants (And Patreon Changes)

[An announcement regarding this Patreon. As the book has begun, and pre-production art is being produced, I will be switching Patreon to monthly starting June. More info in a follow up post]

The giants of Chriirah are powerful omnivorous beings possessing a sophisticated intelligence. The smaller birrin with their linguistic and tool using abilities dominate their shared planet, and the two species have had a varied past together.

Giants have been beasts of burden to the birrin as well as slaves, food, friends, mercenaries and much more. The Fall experienced by birrin civilisation drove the giants to the brink of extinction, with remnant populations surviving in the few remaining wild places. As the birrin again flex their technological muscle, new relationships between the two species are being forged.

The species, while related to the birrin, is distant enough to show considerable differences between their shared quadrilaterian body plan. Beyond size, the giants have a more ancestral body plan with more obvious segmentation and far long bodies. The major differences lie with the head, which in giants has been reduced to bearing only three external jaws, the uppermost having been massively enlarged to form a mobile display structure that rests on top of the head.

Populations of each shared habitats, but neither was ever able to fully exterminate that other and by the time the Birrin had the upper hand to do so, they found the giants too useful to kill off

Alex

The crest can definitely get fancy, will show it in the book!

Alex

Thankya :)

:D

Planets with more than one intelligent species are one of my favorite SF explorations- if for no other reason than the more we learn about the ubiquity of animal intelligence, and the contingency of human supremacy, the more common that condition might be in the universe. Were the Giants and the birrin indigenous to two distant continents? I thinking of how long an Australian marsupial would have had to evolve tool use before humans arrived..

KM

You know. I was here this morning an could have commented right at this was posted. Instead I saw this the on a computer Iwas’t longs in on. Well beside that point I will be VEARY I interested to see how to book coms alsong. Maby som of the smarter giants paint their crest for ration and tribal significance? (Unless they have a city of their own(this might unfortunately be no :( )). So, this is gona be GOOD, so bring us MOAR!

ZCochraine!%

fantastic work - both in the illustration itself, and in designing the Giants.

They are more distant. It would be like if, say, cats had evolved high intelligence. Still mammals but a different line, and evolved intelligence for different reasons.

Alex

So are giants similar to our apes, or early homo sapiens species?

DH

Amazing.

Sebastian Art

It is most appreciated :)

Glad to be here for support! 😁👍
