Floatplane Concepts

Pre-production art for the book; the lead character uses a floatplane to trade. Top has a parasol wing, the lower line art version is the current leading design.

I finally remembered to get the pictures of the seaplanes. How can I get them to you ?

John

The trouble with elevons is they still need to be aft (or foreward) of the center of lift so they can create torque, which either means that the wing has to have a very long chord, as in a delta wing like the Space Shuttle, or needs to be swept, like the B-2, and the closer they are typ the center of lift, the bigger they need to be and the more drag they produce providing pitch authority- hence why the later generations of most delta winged fighters added a canard. I have seen a couple neat looking canard seaplanes...

KM

Inspiration comes from existing floatplanes, but I will consult an engineer before the final design is committed

Alex

The entire tail becomes compressed to a knife like form which may help, along with the very large control surface on the rudder

Alex

Wonderful! Would be happy to see them :)

Alex

My hunch is that a 'real' floatplane would need more vertical stabilizer/rudder. Floatplanes tend to need bigger tail moments to muscle around the additional area of the floats.

KM

I live near a seaplane port, so if you need any reference photos, I can see what I can get.

John

🤔👍 Interesting. Do you consult with engineers (ora are you an engineer yourself) before these mech designs or do you just take inspiration from stuff that already exists and let your imagination go wild?
