Birrin Model

Posing these gangly six legged creatures has never been easy, except from directly side on, which avoids the foreshortening and layering issues the creature's present.

A wildlife artist would be able to use reference images to solve these issues, however there are not very many photos of the birrin in their natural habitat.

Basically I need to make a 3D pose-able digital model I can use again and again to set up future artworks with the birrin. I will post progress as I go.

Actually I did make a short animation a while back! Basically to test if the limb design worked

Alex

I think it would be actually be also exciting to see a little animated waking. That might be later down the line but I still can't wait you more to come.

The 'wings' on the back are used for signalling and to help regulate their body temperature

Alex

I actually made some simple ones in the past, but I need to sit down and make one that can be flexible enough to use again and again

Alex

I DO have a sculpture... sadly in super sculpey and not poseable XD

Alex

Yeah i can basically just slightly tweak the proportions of a good model to fit different groups

Alex

one minor question that I'm sure you've answered many times and I'm sure I've known in the past; do the Birrin have wings, or something similar?

I'm glad the need for this has arose, as along with it being useful having a 3d model to help with future projects, I and I'm sure many others have wanted to see a 3d Birrin!

It would be ideal if you had both a digital puppet and actual macquette to play with. Maybe even a larger, half scale thing made of cardboard tubes and wire that could be set into environments and photographed. Or cutting up some toy animals and kitbashing them together with apoxie sculpt. Or if you know someone with a 3d printer, print out the pieces.

I'm eager to see more varieties in birrin body types (old age, obesity, ethnicity, etc) but it's definetely a good idea to have a reliable archetype to work with!

I think I have JUST enough training in 3D to pull off a very basic, rigged birrin model. Just enough for art references.

Alex

i keep telling myself the same thing! I'm planning on Gurney-ing it with a simple couple of maquettes though because i really can't use digital sculpting tools T_T
