Armour on the beak makes so much sense! Not only are their sensitive mouthparts their dexterous prmary hand but they are the most vulnerable part of the body when trying to peek around a corner. As their firearm is on the side, I imagine the pouches to be located on the other side to distribute the overall bulk more evenly.
