Episode 25: The Black Radical Tradition and US Empire: A Time for Reflection w/Anthony Monteiro

In this episode, Aaron is joined by Anthony Monteiro. They discuss the Black Radical Tradition in the context of US empire and capitalism. They focus especially on the towering figure of W.E.B. Dubois.

After many years as university professor--mostly at Temple University--Monteiro continues to work as a scholar and activist at the Saturday Free School in Philadelphia and at Black Agenda Report.

Comments

I enjoyed this although I am more sympathetic to the Counter-revolution of 1776 thesis than you two. Horne apparently misread some of his sources, but it definitely fits what was going on along the frontier. Also, the comments about the malleability of politics today equally applies to the last quarter of the 18th century. It’s possible the French Revolution set back the emancipation movement in Britain by a couple of decades, but I certainly think there was already a threat to colonial slavery in the mid 1770s, with serious Quaker opposition taking shape

I can imagine. No rush obviously. Thanks for all the work you’re doing. The pod has been an invaluable resource.

Agreed. I am planning to set this up, but so much on my plate at present.

Aaron Good

Such a great episode. I would love to hear this in conversation with Liu as you mentioned at the end.

dogsbeout

Haha don't mean to detract from your dogged work, just a thought. An exceptional listen as always

Gus

Certainly worth doing, but at present I've so many projects on the front and back burners...

Aaron Good

yes. Also, worst thing about the conference is that there's no usable audio from the opening twin speeches from Monterio and West.

Aaron Good

Great stuff - I think a complementary exploration with a scholar of radical indigenous movements would also be a fruitful discussion. Thinking about state terror campaigns against figures like Peltier, Trudell, etc

Gus

Enjoyed this! Getting a hug from Dr West is like gaining a year on your life ❤️

John McElroy

great!

This is great. Though I have parted company with CovertAction, a few of our pieces are still there. The next Indonesia installment will describe how JFK and Hammarskjold wanted West Papua to be independent...and how it apparently got Hammarskjold killed.

Aaron Good

No problems, my friends love the stuff from Covert Action Magazine and Black Op Radio as well, and then pass it on to independence leaders in East Timor and West Papua

BruceInAdelaide

There's a lot more coming...but I have to finish some book stuff and then make the Powerpoint of doom...

Aaron Good

I love the "Indonesia stuff"

BruceInAdelaide

Yes, I am planning go do something.

Aaron Good

This was great! Not sure if it’s worth the attention lol but given its sort of cultural prominence at the moment I’d be interested in hearing a deep dive on the flaws and ideology of the 1619 project with Prof. Monteiro or another scholar
