In his last years he claimed to be a CIA agent named John Butler Train, and claimed that “Phil Ochs had died.” Which you can chalk it up to him being an alcoholic, mired in sorrow and failure, and the fact that he got beat up and strangled (ruining his vocal chords) when he was in Africa recording an album. But there actually was a real John Butler Train that worked in high finance, and who probably was a CIA asset at least. It’s a bizarre story.

2022-05-30 01:19:53 +0000 UTCRe: Carter assassination attempts, John Hinckley Jr. was arrested with weapons in Nashville, TN in October of 1980, and was in retrospect said to have been stalking Carter. Six months later he shot Reagan. Not sure what to make of that, but it does seem to deeply undermine the “deranged lone wolf obsessed with Jodie Foster nothing else to see here folks” official narrative. It’s wild that Hinckley is now free and performing music. Have you ever thought about reaching out to him and asking for an interview, or do you know any researchers who have?

2022-05-29 18:11:01 +0000 UTCYes, that is weird, but I don't think there was ever a coherent phase 3 consensus... I think that the stories were promoted in part to just muddy the waters... One common psywar tactic here is to flood the discussion with all these false sponsors so it seems like there's all these competing wacky theories out there and no one can ever hope to sort through them all. This is all to distract from the fact that the plot obviously came from the highest echelon of politico-economic power; no other milieu could carry out the murder and maintain a cover-up for nearly 60 years and counting... As for Colby, I have been thinking about him lately--his strange post-DCI adventures, as well as his death. I hope to say something about this soon...

She is Albanian and grew up in a unique condition, experiencing both the late stages of communism and the subsequent failure of shock therapy capitalism. She makes the point that an ostensibly free society can be restrictive for people because of poverty/inequality imposed by capitalism. I first came across her work because I was fascinated that JFK and Joe Kennedy Jr were taught by Harold Laski, a socialist professor at the LSE. I went back and read the transcript of that Bill Colby / Booth Luce phone call, and whatever evidence on the Pawley plot the two of them are talking about, the transcript ends with Colby suggesting Booth forward the information to Schweiker. Just more of that transparency. Its worth noting though that I dont think Booth Luce forwarded anything to schweicker. That alone makes me wonder if the call was performative. You get the idea of the phase three stories onto a recorded phone call that you assume historians will have access to but don't actually trigger a spot light from a congressional investigation by actually following through on sending the "evidence" to schweicker. Maybe one final gasp from the CIA old guard trying to cement the phase three stories before being replaced by people who benefited from everyone forgetting about it (HW in particular).
