Episode 48: Ukraine and the End of the (Unipolar) World w/Lawrence Wilkerson and Peter Kuznick

Aaron is joined by Lawrence Wilkerson and Peter Kuznick to discuss the Ukraine War in the context of America’s evaporating “unipolar moment.”

Lawrence Wilkerson is a retired US Army Colonel, former chief of staff to US Secretary of State Colin Powell, and current Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Government and Public Policy at the College of William & Mary:

Peter Kuznick is Professor of History and Director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University. The author of numerous books and articles, Kuznick is perhaps most notably the cocreator—with Oliver Stone—of The Untold History of the United States. It is a 12-part documentary series that first played on Showtime, and there’s also an excellent book version, now in its second edition.

Special thanks to Casey Moore for the episode art and Dana Chavarria for the sound engineering!

Peter's a great guy. He has a few liberal tics here and there. I try and take the good and shrug off the bad when I can. "Uyghur genocide" is a brazen fabrication...so brazen that a lot of people don't interrogate it.

Listening to this 16 months after initial release, Kuznik's China comments are so cringe! Most of the show, Kuznik sounds rational, but enter China and it's "China is authoritarian...Uighyr genocide..." I laughed out loud. What a difference 16 months make! I'll take China's authoritarianism over US authoritarianism any day, any day. I'm curious to see how Kuznik's views have (hopefully) shifted.

I like Larry. A small number of old Establishment people like him and Jeff Sachs choose to speak candidly about dimensions of our imperial corruption that the media/politicians/academics typically get paid to ignore or lie about.

Wilkerson has always fascinated me; just when you think our institutions are completely toast they produce someone like this. To me he’s sounds like a leftist at times (conservative anti-interventionists having become an endangered species decades ago). In fact, when he was commenting about big oil’s influence on foreign policy I found myself wondering if he realizes that he’s essentially saying that we have a fascist foreign policy. Wilkerson is a textbook example as to why we should make every effort to establish cross-party political coalitions when it comes to important issues like foreign policy. There’s no other peaceful way to reform the warfare state. As the empire’s decline results in an increasingly deformed politics and ridiculous political figures, this becomes more and more difficult. But try we must in my opinion.

Great episode.

Many thanks John! It has been a ton of work, but I have gotten some priceless help from a number of people as well as the support of everyone here. I could never have predicted that things would play out this way, but it is awesome!

Just have to say, since you’ve started in the winter with all these projects, 48 episodes, interviews and even tweets, the quality of your work and the team you’ve help to construct is the very best! Your ideas for content, work ethic for the listener and important scholarly voice are a very real public service of the highest order. Telling the truth in a society full of liars can be pretty tricky and I for one am riveted to see how this grows and continues to bring light into our lives! Cheers 🍻!

Love that you got Wilkerson back, I loved the first ep and can’t believe I find myself nodding along and agreeing with a prominent member of the Bush administration lol. Also, maybe you’ve used it before but my favorite intro music so far, good song

The theophoric philology of America is Amurru-Cain, a war nation was our terrible plan.

Wow you got Lawrence Wilkerson on your show? He always struck me as one of the more sane American military officials
