Also you need to remember this is based on viking culture. Vikings would hear about Thor's death and think the outcome of hearing about his death is that he was a coward instead of a hero. Cause thors gave up his life instead of killing everyone off. Viking culture glorifies killing others in battle. It can be taken in different ways but if askeladd told him how thors died it can easily be interpreted in a negative way according to viking culture instead of a heroic positive type of way. Therefore his name and legacy could potentially be tarnished instead of keeping it glorified like it was. Thors gained a name and reputation for being the most skilled on the battlefield and killing his enemies up until he chose a peaceful life with his family.

Thors won the duel but Askeladd maybe wouldn't have actually wanted to tell how he died with just a bunch of arrows being shot at him after "giving up his life" even though he had purpose and had a reason that he had to give up his life the way the vikings would see it is as something pathetic and think of him as a coward and trash and think his name and capabilities and feats were all made up at least the ones who don't know him. Floki went out of his way to find and kill him. He would gladly tarnish Thor's name and his reputation if he found out how he died. I agree with you on what you said for sure but it also could be that askeladd had enough respect for thors that he didn't want to make his death seem lesser than what it should be. Thors would not care at all if he were alive but it doesn't change the fact that askeladd found high admiration for thors at that point so I can see it taken multiple different ways.

Whether thorfinn took the advice or not he didn't care but askeladd was intentionally trying to give him advice about that big sword not being the best weapon for him at his size.

2023-06-29 01:35:05 +0000 UTCAbout Askeladd saying that Thors died a "normal death": my interpretation is not that he wants to keep it a secret in general but that he doesn't want to tell Floki specifically. I think that Askeladd had huge respect for Thors and despises Floki for not only wanting Thors dead but also not having the balls to kill him himself and having Askeladd do it for him. I think Askeladd thinks that Floki doesn't deserve to know how Thors died.
