I really love the fact that the Spearhead squad are clearly torn and not quite sure how to feel about the memorial, cathartic as it is, but are unambiguously elated at Fido's return <3

We all knew it was gonna happen, that wasn't the surprise. The surprise was how they decided to do it

***POSTING AGAIN FOR VISIBILITY***
Dear mods for Autosave.
I have a complete non-spoiler but important thing to say about episode 16 of 86. It is a horrible mistake, but the Crunchyroll subs have a typo error. If you read the real numbers down below not the subs they are different. Its a costly mistake and could effect Autosave's understanding of the timeline of events.
Again episode 16 has this mistake. If you can please forward this message to them as it could be a major misunderstanding. Thank you in advance.

That's a positive way of looking at the mascot tradition, but the flipside is as a hostage, like Shin said, to manipulate soldiers. Humanity may be fighting a war of survival now, but this was a tradition that was in use when that was NOT the case for the militaristic Empire.

Note that the soldier that reprimanded Marcel was being hypocritical, while it came from good will he also viewed the 86 as poor children that are still doing this against their will or better judgement and pitied them like Ernst did disregarding their autonomy. These two represent the majority opinions of the military towards the 86, very few understand them

LN Spoiler
Fact from the LN about Fido is that he was once a robot dog in his house that his father used to test the capabilities of AI. Shin getting attached to the dog his father said he could keep it. After Shin was taken away Fido self taught itself to transfer its data into a Scavenger to help support the frontline in search of its master.

To quote the great Pulp Fiction:
Frederica: Shinei, are you ok?
Shin: Nah man, I’m pretty fuckin’ far from ok.

Soldiers are incredibly superstitious, the slightest bit of perceived luck, good or bad, can drastically effect the morale of a unit. The 86, who had a chance to not fight, and instead returned to the battlefield are already seen as loose cannons. On top of that, the units they're attached to have a high attrition rate, lending an air that they don't care about who they're fighting with, as long as they get to destroy the Legion.
While it might be seen as a positive to have such strong fighters in your unit, if they have a reputation of being sole survivors or always fighting alone regardless of everyone else, it will engender a strong bit of superstition about them. Sure, Shin will make sure you don't turn into Legion parts, but it'd sure be a lot better if he saved you instead. Despite no longer being discriminated because of San Magnolia's trash policies, now they're being ostracized purely on their ruthless performance on the battlefield.

I wasn’t ready, you weren’t ready, we all weren’t ready. You could see it coming from a mile away but the hard cut and the way they did it was just brutal
