People are "quick to judge" because the story and Lakan himself make every effort to have them make that judgment, Lakan himself is the one that heavily implied he just raped and impregnated that courtesan to lower her value. Not judging Lakan would be ignoring what the story and the characters are telling you.

What Maomao did is the equivalent of filling 5 cups with 11 proof wine and the adding 3 shots of 151 proof alcohol. Lakan was expecting that he could at least handle the wine, but wasn't expecting the high alcohol content shot.
