The Last Samurai (2003) Full Length Reaction!

You should check out a film called Glory, also directed by Edward Zwickand staring Denzel Washington, another powerful movie.

I love this movie and great reaction guys. It's relatively accurate. The main inaccuracy is that Samurai did use firearms, and had been for centuries. It's a good symbolic depiction of the Meiji Era in Japan. Japan rapidly modernized, and it was a huge shock to tradition, and the Samurai who enjoyed a certain status in society were suddenly stripped of all of it. Katsumoto is most likely based on Saigo Takamori, who led sort of the last Samurai rebellion against the Meiji government. He died in the battle of Shiroyama, which sort of sealed the end of the old tradition of the Samurai. So it gets the message across really well. I also enjoy how they avoided the "White Savior" issue pretty well by having Algren pretty much powerless to stop anything and just sort of taking part and bearing witness to a change that was unstoppable.

Example: the BATTLE OF STIRLING was NOT engaged in an open field, but on a bridge, the Scots rebels pinned the English Army in a "choke-hold" on the bridge, but the producers told Mel Gibson it would cost too money to re-create it in its historic actuallity.

.."just-saying-iz-all" .. i enjoyed this film, I saw it in a theater when it premiered .. but don't take it as "historically accurate" .. but, a fun "popcorn" saga, nonetheless.

John Mccormick

There are VERY few movies that could be truly considered "historically accurate" - Braveheart is great to who cares

Andrew Porter

Braveheart good as epic saga, but SOO historically inaccurate.

Great reaction! If you two haven't seen Braveheart or Last of the Mohicans you should def put them on the list!
