King’s novel doesn’t actually have the gruesome ending. In his novel, the five of them escape and when they run out of gas, manage to siphon more from another car and just keep driving, hoping one day to drive out of the mist. It was Frank Darabount who came up with the much bleaker ending, but King said it was an improvement.
