Annie going to Seattle to stalk him has always been weird. It’s more a symptom of this being pre-internet. Nowadays she just would have stalked on social media or googled or run a background check which I have known many people do in real life. The guy who played the son did not have much of an acting career as he got older, which is a shame because he is a good actor. I don’t know what else you would have seen him in except a small role in Kindergarten Cop. Tom Hanks friend from Chicago who told him the plot of the movie is his real life wife Rita Wilson. Rob Reiner directed When Harry Met Sally which was Norah Ephron’s biggest hit also starring Meg Ryan and he advised her on directing this herself. Your reaction was hysterical as usual. I’m glad you had fun. The issues with the movie do stick out a bit more today, but it is still a fun watch with great dialog and performances.

Your perspective is interesting, not having watched too many older rom coms. This movie was trying to may homage to romance stories of the 50s and 60s (so about as far away as today is from this) but improve on them. Those movies could be a bit formulaic, person is settling for someone, they see or meet someone else and that spark of true love or fate wakes them up then they do wacky things in pursuit of that person, they get together, the end. Usually the person they are with is portrayed to be pretty bad. In this they made Walter less terrible and Annie more conflicted. I agree the movie needed another 15-20 minutes or a sequel would be interesting of dealing with people trying to replace a wife/mother. Unfortunately the writer/director of this Norah Ephron passed away. This would be a great premise for a limited series where the events of the movie could be the first 2 episodes. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan did another movie with Norah that was also a remake of a classic holiday film. That movie You’ve Got Mail is a fun movie but isn’t as heartfelt as this.
