One More Thing: Span Hunter

Greetings adventurers!

Across the reaches of time and space, Span Hunters are feared for their cunning and their commitment to the task at hand. Once they're put onto a target, they rarely stop until that target has been eliminated. They choose to isolate and attack when the opportunity suits them best. Their signature butterfly daggers are coveted by many, but a Span Hunter worth their weight would never let go of their blade. Now you can have one in your game.

Design Notes By Matthew:

Creating creatures that have the ability to stalk their prey and show a level of intelligence is always something fascinating for me. I love thinking of the ways I can give them a tool kit that can be used in multiple ways. It's always my priority to make sure that the DM running these monsters feels like they can have multiple options in how they engage with them, or in fact disengage.

One of the most important things to me is making sure that the enemies I design aren't just straight up bags of HP with a few basic attacks. I want them to have set ups and payoffs. Thankfully the Butterfly effect works in that way by default. I wanted to create a much simpler version of the dagger's properties for use for the DM. It's a bad move to over complicate how a monster resolves their actions. Doing so is often a recipe for a frustrating encounter behind the screen.

Though the butterfly effect is iconic for the creature, I think the smoke canister is one of my favorite parts of the creature. It presents an opportunity to cause chaos in an area and use that to attack or escape. I love the idea of this canister popping and leaving everyone confused on where the thing hunting them has gone. Couple this with the Blink spell and you're looking at the potential for a very scary encounter.
